Will Jacques Brel Be Alive in May?
#1Will Jacques Brel Be Alive in May?
Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:17pmI'm wanting to see this show in May (1st week). Any idea if it will still be open?

Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:19pmMy guess is no. Constantine said that the show is having some serious financial problems.

oooh I'm actually not sure. But I hope you can see it. :)
Too bad you missed Natascha

Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:22pmI know! Diaz is one of my favorite performers too. Yeah, I was expecting it will be closed by May, but still, a girl can hope right? I have heard this staging is gorgeous, and I am a huge fan of Gay Marshall (she was superb in Baker's Wife at Papermill).

Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:23pmYou must try and see it before May, surely there's a way. The show is sublime, and Marshall is brilliant.

I know, Munk! I wish I could get vacation time sooner, but alas!
I always come to NYC this week in May, so I guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles...
At least we have a glorious cast recording. I listen to it non-stop.

I agree. She was captivating. Who replaced her?
Marshall was great as well.
Bobby, I hope you can get there before it closes.

SHe was replaced with her Understudy/Standby.
Diaz needs a big Broadway show. NOw!

Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:32pmI wasn't crazy about Diaz. I find her voice weak, wobbly, and nasal.

And they're still inviting the press to review, so they must be trying to keep it alive:

i saw Natascha's replacement in for Gay when Gay was out. she really has such a beautiful tone. Jayne Patterson was used as a vocal extra in the movie "My Life In The Shadows" for Judy Garland, fyi. she's super super nice too. :)
i love Natascha but i highly recommend Jayne.

Aww I LOVE Natascha's voice! But her acting is really what did it for me. She's in Carnival as Rosalie, right? (Kennedy Center)
I ALSO saw Jayne in for Gay and she did beautifully!

Posted: 2/1/07 at 5:03pmI have it on very good authority that the show will probably close in three weeks.

Jayne Paterson took over for Natascia and she is divine.
Her tone is incredible and her voice is one of the most underappreciated I can think of for being as good as she is. While not to say that she doesn't nail every song - especially "My Death" - her "Old Folks" is particularly sublime.
Go now.

I agree that Jayne is sublime. And Constantine Maroulis plays off Robert like he's been playing this part forever. Those two have great chemistry, knowing just when to move, especially in Timid Frieda, in which Jayne really shines as well. Her ingenue character is superb, and her voice just fabulous. I saw the show just recently, and I'll have to say that I prefer this current foursome to the one on the cast recording. Their voices blend perfectly, yet each is distinct enough that they shine individually as well. Gay is always wonderful, sounds just like a Paris cabaret singer, which I think is the effect she's going for here...
I was really glad to see Constantine work it, he's got rich gifts that none of his previous projects even allowed him to exercise. I wish I could see it again soon! If you guys have not been, I highly recommend the show, go help it out!
