I just finished reading the recent reviews to the newly cast THE COLOR PURPLE. My personal opinions aside -- the critics have clearly embraced Fantasia's performance, also praising new cast members NaTasha Yvette Williams, Chaz Lamar Sheperd, and Alton Fitzgerald White. I think it would be a wise move for Oprah and the producers of THE COLOR PURPLE to spring for an updated cast recording, a la Brooke Shields in GREASE and WONDERFUL TOWN. Clearly Fantasia has a fan base extending beyond The Broadway Theatre, and to only record Fantasia's parts in the score, or even Williams, Sheperd, and White's parts, it would only cost the price of paying those four performers, the studio for re-recording and remixing the album, and the price of marketing the new album. It seems that it would certainly pay off in the end, especially if Fantasia stays with THE COLOR PURPLE for the long haul, whether that be in the Broadway production or even on tour.

Also, wouldn't that be dependent upon which record label that Fantasia is signed to (if she is in fact signed with a label)?

Based on the reaction of people around me on Saturday, I think they're going to have to. Or they're going to have a lot of disappointed people. The guy walking around in the upper mezz couldn't sell any of the Original recordings for anything. People only seemed to want them if it had Fantasia on it.

I'm just glad that they had the foresight to ASK if it was Fantasia before buying. I'd hate to have seen the fight that would have broken out if they'd bought it and then wanted their money back.

Fantasia is signed with J Records/ Clive Davis. She has a critically acclaimed cd out in fact right now. And her latest single is hot on the charts.

Im sure Clive would agree to her recording a new cast recording. But I hear she is working on a new cd with J records as we speak.

If the producers want to capitalize on the raves for her performance, they should get Fantasia into a recording studio ASAP, so they can be selling those albums at the show for $25 a piece or whatever they charge for cast recordings nowadays at the theatre. I bet they would be a hot seller.

He blocked me. He seems to think that I'm some anger-ridden, bitter young man. He is unendingly dramatic, saying things to the effect of "I was afraid to sleep because I thought you would come slit my throat."

I think he's totally lost it. A bit nuts if you ask me. And judging from what I've heard people tell me who have met him, I'm not far off from being correct.

What charts is her single "hot" on?

And how can you be sure he'll agree to a new cast recording? She's under contract with J Records and they rarely let their artists record for other companies, because she's *their* artist and they won't be making money off of the album sales. That's why there's no soundtrack for the Cinderella movie with Brandy and Whitney Houston- because Clive Davis wouldn't let Whitney record outside Arista.

I seriously hope they don't do this. Not to pull a bryan, but there are so many other shows that were deserving of a cast recording and didn't get ONE; A Color Purple doesn't need ANOTHER, and then a new one every time a new stuntcast comes in, just because the fans can't suck it up and deal like every other fan of a replacement actor.

Steve2, unless you've read all of Foster's posts, no, you don't.

orange,

Have you seen The Color Purple before and/or after Fantasia? I've seen it before and after and can certainly understand why a new cast recording eill be released. The original was cast recording was good, but I overheard people at the show last weekend refusing to buy the CD once they learned Fantasia was not on it.

It's not really about not being able to suck it up. The show had a facelift, and I believe a new cast recording would be a good idea to reflect the change.

The R&B charts, with her single When I See U.

She performed When I See U live on BET yesterday. Her voice sounded strong, so it doesn't appear that 8 shows a week is causing her trouble, for now at least.

I would love to see a new cast recording, but I understand the arguments against it. She leaves in October (although the producers are trying to get her to stay) which doesn't give much time to recoup on a new recording.

I agree that chances are slim, due to both her being with a label and her short run - but I wish it would happen. I don't really love THE COLOR PURPLE, but I would buy it for her.

It has to be hot on quite a few charts becuase I hear it on the radio and see the video on tv all the time. Doesn't Elizabeth Withers also have a single out on radio right now also?

I was some how under the impression that the new recording was a definite and that is the only reason I didn't purchase the OBCR. I really want this recording, I guess I better pick up the original next time I'm out.

Original cast.

I overheard people at the show last weekend refusing to buy the CD once they learned Fantasia was not on it.
Exactly. They don't care about the show, they care about Fantasia. Why spend all that money and rerecord the entire show just to hear her songs? Has The Color Purple's OBCR even made a profit yet?

It's not really about not being able to suck it up. The show had a facelift, and I believe a new cast recording would be a good idea to reflect the change.
Yes, it is. Do you know how many "facelifts" Broadway shows are given each and every year? None of them have a new recording every time some replacement actor comes in, no matter how good s/he is. Why should Fantasia get special treatment? Because she has selfish fans that refuse to to live by the same standards as every other Broadway fan?

And forgive me. Her single is hot on one genre chart.

ljay, I know this is a rare occurance, but I agree.

"And forgive me. Her single is hot on one genre chart.

ljay, I know this is a rare occurance, but I agree."

Well listen, you asked where was her single hot at and someone answered you, then you have the nerve to agree with a person who wants fantasia's fans gone? If you don't want to hear about fantasia stop asking questions about her because who else would respond to you about her music unless it's a fan who is following it? Simply because you don't like the answer don't try to minimize it by saying it's hot on ONE chart. Where are you hot at?

BTW, there really is a "block" button? I never knew it, why don't you all use that button instead of stalking posters and coming in threads causing trouble for people you clearly don't like? Use the BLOCK button, or better yet, stay out of TCP or fastasia topic especially if you're only coming in to cause trouble and show your A$$.

" They don't care about the show, they care about Fantasia. Why spend all that money and rerecord the entire show just to hear her songs? Has The Color Purple's OBCR even made a profit yet? "

If they didn't care about the show why would they be there watching it? TCP has been running for over a year and a half how do you know they don't already have the older cast recording? Why would they want to purchase it again? BTW, if it is going to be re-recorded is the money coming out of your pocket? what's with you and the obsession with "money"? Fantasia has made enough for that show for them to do five or six additional casts recordings and still turn a profit. Whether it's done or not, I don't know but you need not get your panties in a bunch if they do, they won't go broke, they'd probably make more money.

This is crazy. While sure Fantasia might be doing well in the show - if the idea of a new recording were to come up..Jeanette Bayardelle (the Celie on tour now) is CLEARLY the best vocalist. None of the other girls sing the role like Bayardelle....it'd be a major disservice to put someone who isn't nearly as vocally impressive on a CD.

The things people do for money....ugh.

My2cents- have you seen Fantasia in the show? What are you basing your comments on? Its funny because the critics are saying the exact opposite. And orangekittles This is not just a stunt casting - I guess you havent read the reviews from Clive Barnes and co.? This is not just a replacement here- this is a history making performance by Fantasia. But you dont have to listen to me - just google Fantasia's name and you will see that it is a fact. And Fantasia should be treated differently than every other replacement- because her performance warrants it.

And,its not just about the voice- its the character and the interpretation of the songs that make it worthy of a new recording.
