We have three brilliant revivals and many think Patti and Laura already have the tonys and that Daniel will receive a tony. Some even say Boyd could win. Many think Loretta, Jenna, Keli, Paulo and Danny B are contenders in their categories. Sunday and South Pacific both have a chance at the design awards. Bartlett Sher is also sort of a lock for best director. So do you think these three revivals will dominate the tonys or is this just overated hype.
From what I've seen: YES. I think many of the awards could and SHOULD go to the revivals.
Most of the new musicals this season really have not been tony worthy.

And in respect to physical performance from the revivals, there is nothing sad about them sweeping such awards (if they indeed do) because, hopefully, the designs of shows, whether new or revivals, should all come from original concepts of the creators....age of show aside.
I also think that the opinions of a lot of the new shows are so diverse.
I've seen a lot of new things I've LIKED, but not LOVED.

I agree dramamama the new shows this year don't give you the excitement shows Spring Awakening, Grey Gardens, Drowsy Chaperone and Wicked gave you.
Other than Best Revival (duh!), I think revivals will win:
Best Director either Bartlett Sher or Sam Buntrock)
Best Actress (Patti LuPone)
Best Featured Actor (Boyd Gaines)
Best Featured Actress (Laura Benanti)
Best Set Design (Sunday...)
Best Lighting Design (South Pacific)
Best Sound Design (South Pacific)
I also think the tide is starting to swing towards Paulo Szot's favor, and would not be at all surprised to see him win Best Actor.
The revivals will prevail this year, I'm guessing they will take all of the design awards (except maybe the new award for sound desgin) as well as most of the acting awards.
Am I the only one who thinks Danny Burstien deserves and will win the F. Actor Tony?
I would love for Danny to win it, I think he stands a chance but Boyd Ganies will be stiff competition
This is a poor season for new musicals. I don't see any of the new musicals lasting very long(more than 3 years).
But why give BORING BOYD GAINS his 4th Tony, while the always reliable Danny Burstien is turning in a wonderful winning performance that is anything but boring? Thats just how i see it and am hoping Tony voters do too.
Spell.
Revivals will take all 4 of the acting awards, likely direction, and many if not all of the design wins. Yep, and good, shows Broadway that the past is a bit better than the present, as of late. This was an awful season. Xanadu, while fine and fun, is the best of the lots. That's not saying much. And we haven't been short on new musicals; they just all are either boring or awful. I mean, In the Heights in any other year would be shut out of nominations.

I know Patti Lupone, Laura Benanti, and Daniel Evans basically are the frontrunners in their races. I know Danny and Boyd could win but some are saying that will be the only acting award the revivals don't win. Some think it could be Daniel Breaker, or Robin
Daniel Evans hasn't been the front-runner in his race for quite awhile. It's going to be Miranda or Szot.

Oops I meant to write Paulo Szot
I've never considered Boyd the frontrunner in his category. I've always thought that Daniel Breaker was. I'd be much happier if he won than if Boyd did. And to answer the original poster: yes, this is the year of revivals. In my opinion, the best new musical this year has been Passing Strange and that won't exactly sweep the awards this year the way that Spring Awakening did (the most Tony's I could even imagine it winning are 3, maybe 4).
Actually, there are only two categories where the revivals will be shut out of: Best Orchestrations and Best Choreography. The Tony's won't want to award SITPWG's tiny orchestrations, and Gypsy and South Pacific are using the originals. Also, SITPWG has no choreography, Gypsy is using the old Jerome Robbins choreography, and South Pacific more has musical staging than actual choreography (although it could get a surprise nomination because of how seamless it runs with the direction). Other than that, you will see at least one revival nominated in every category, and winning in a great deal of them.
LaCageAuxFollesFan2, do you seriously think Boyd Gaines is giving a "boring" performance as Herbie? I haven't seen South Pacific, but I love Danny Burstein and don't doubt his performance is great...but I really don't understand how you could say Gaines is boring. I personally think he made several more daring choices as Herbie than many other actors would.
I think Herbie is just a boring character, even though Boyd Gaines makes him much more entertaining. I really don't think he deserves the Tony this year. I thought he did last year though.
Boyd Gaines is outstanding in Gypsy, and I think he deserves the award 100%. He's getting even better now, and he's anything but boring. One of the best performances that I've seen given on a stage. The scene where Herbie leaves Rose is incredible.
Danny Burstein is really fantastic too though.
Revivals have ruled the Tonys for decades, owing to the risk of producing new shows; tourists will always see a revival rather than waste $100 on some new show they might not like.
I know many of us here don't care for YF, but doesn't it have a chance of wining something?
