I just saw the Will Rogers Follies tour last night and thought it was wonderful, but it left me with a few questions. Having not seen it on broadway, I wondered how it compared and what was left in tact.
I was a little put off that the Rogers' kids were missing from THE BIG TIME. I know they are on the CD, but did this really happen on broadway or did it just get cut for the tour?
While the Follies numbers are fantastic, I wonder how it has been scaled down. I believe there were 10 Follies girls and 3 guys how does that compare??
Also, on the CD they mention a Dog show as part of the Wild west show. In the tour we have a man played by Will's Pa with whips. What was the dog show?
By far though, the staircase steals the show! The Wylie Post bit never gets old. I laughed every time!
"It's like children's theatre for 40-year old gay people!" - XANADU THE MUSICAL
I actually just saw it this past Wednesday. Overall, I was very impressed.
I noticed the kids missing as well and my guess would be that since this was a non-equity tour and since they only, I think, travel to college theatres, they probably couldn't afford tutors and the environment is too difficult for the children to be a part of - Same thing probably relates to the Dog act. Actually, to my knowledge, most tours of the show have not used the kids because of the nature of being on the road, and in my opinion they're actual presence is not terribly essential to the flow of the show.
As for the dog act, we do have a dog act in larger cities, but as with Larry Gatlin, they are only with us when the individual theaters opt to have them.
