I don't want it to go down in history as the show with most nominations without a win. I haven't seen it so give what you think it will win. NOT SHOULD, what it will.
I honestly have no idea what it will win. The year's latest Hasty Pudding Show has so much buzz, and is picking up so much momentum that I'm beginning to doubt Scottsboro Boy's chances at winning anything. One can hope it'll win Best Score though-- still the Tony voters are just as stupid as the morons voting on Best Cast Album for the Grammys.
Remember when we discussed not starting 65457 threads a week, love?
I have a strange feeling that it will take the prize for lighting. It should be winning for choreography as well, but I doubt that's going to happen.

Blaxx, I believe I have started 5? You don't have to read them if you don't like them.

I've been posting on here for about a year and I've started three threads, maybe four. As for the question, I think I deserves to win best lighting. The lighting for the electric chair dance was insane.

I think a lot of time, the majority of voters are barely versed in tech, so they're at a loss when voting for Sound Design and Lighting. Unless one show REALLY sticks out, I think they have the tendency to go with the show that they liked best, that remains the freshest in their minds.
I hope it gets best book of musical.
their creative use of all of those chairs Is worthy of a Tony nomination, but I don't know if it deserves a win.
What do y'all think.
I think it deserves everything it's nominated for, but I think that Stroman has to take Best Director of a Musical. No one else came close to her achievement on The Scottsboro Boys and I hope she is not forgotten in a Book of Mormon sweep.
I'm actually not a big fan of the show at all, but I will admit some aspects of it are absolutely incredible.
I didn't see it but everyone I know who saw it raved about it. I am kind of hoping that I get home and find out that it upset Book of Mormon as I think Mormon is a bit overrated. (I saw it). I won't be home for the Tonys. Will record them.

The fact that it got that many nominations six months after closing was it's win. I wouldn't count on seeing it get any statues. Remember, a lot of the Tony voters are presenters of Broadway series in markets outside of New York City. They want to bring "Tony Award winning shows" to their venues. Considering this doesn't have an official national tour planned (they will be "touring" to regional houses) I just don't see many of the Tony voters going for it.
I think it has a good chance of winning lighting, and possibly orchestrations or sound design. I think it is unlikely to win in any of its other categories:
Musical, book, score, director will go to Mormon
Choreography to Anything Goes
Not likely to win any of the 3 acting noms, set design

In my opinion, I don't think winning the tony always guarantees good sales on tour. I have lived in Denver for the past 19 years. "Spring Awakening" took the Tony but people were not lined up to see it even with the ads saying it won the Tony. But if "WICKED" comes to town everyone goes nuts and it didn't win Best Musical. "RENT" did win but with the story surrounding the production, it would have been a hit no matter what, most likely. I think it is about the same with "The Book of Mormon". It doesn't need to win the top prize to do well on tour. Word of mouth has already spread widely and people want to see it. I don't think "Avenue Q" generated as much excitement before or after it won the Tony.
It just seems to be a popularity contest. I so wish I had seen Scottsboro Boys as I think, based on what I have heard, that it may well deserve to win. Just my random thoughts.
I do not think there will be a Mormon sweep .... I think they will certainly win a lot. But, none of the design elements in Mormon are worth anything, and none of the actors will win.
In terms of SCOTTSBORO -- I think it has a very good chance at the following:
- Score
- Lighting
- Sound
- Orchestration
- Choreography
... possible chance at Director, but I have a feeling it will go to Mormon, and Stroman will win Choreography. I'm sorry but Kathleen Marshall did an ok job with Anything Goes, but she did what anyone would do with Anything Goes. Stroman's choreography was unique and inventive, and suited the performers as well as the piece in a way I haven't seen probably ever.
Stroman's choreography reminded me of something I believe Clive Barnes said about Michael Bennett-- something like he makes the most hackneyed dance steps look fresh and inventive (and apropos to the story). I don't remember the exact quote, but it was to that extent. Stroman's choreography was masterly, and at times, thrilling. It is my hope she'll win over that beloved hack Kathleen Marshall who tends to cheese up even the classiest musicals with tippy taps and big, indulgent smiley chorus kids.
As for score, this was Kander's Falstaff. He's 83 or 84 and he created a breathtaking score. People will carp about it being too similar to Chicago or Cabaret (as they always will), but I didn't notice too many differences-- all I noticed were typically infectious Kander vamps and some of the most gorgeous melody lines I've heard in a long time. Bobby Lopez is talented, but I'd rather see him win for something else, rather than a Hasty Pudding Show with too much hype. Half the lyrics don't even rhyme anyway. Where is style? Where is skill? Where's craft?, to quote Mme. Armfeldt.
Here's my question: He didn't have a big number, he didn't have the showiest part in the piece, but he was chilling and magnetic. I'm talking about John Cullum. They couldn't have thrown a nod his way too? Oh well.

Admittedly, I have not seen the show. I've heard excellent things about it, however, I hope Tony voters do not take the easy way out and just hand out every award to the show, a la The Producers. That year led for the most boring Tony Awards broadcast in history, when it did not even deserve half of the awards it received. Let's hope that voters have wisened up a bit...

My gut feeling (and I hope I'm wrong on this one) is that, like Chorus Line and The Producers, it will win in some categories that I feel were surpassed this season, particularly Best Score, Best Actor in a Musical, etc., etc. Again, I would be thrilled to be proven wrong on this, but . . . .
