Add me to the list of those who ABHOR the 1982 film version of ANNIE. John Huston hated the song "Tomorrow"...he had NO BUSINESS directing the film.
Granted some of the casting was genius. Finney, Quinn, Burnett, Reinking, Curry, Holder and Minami were letter perfect in their respective roles, but the overall execution of the story was just messy and really overblown.
In the right hands the original big screen version could have been something realy special, especially with that cast but they dropped the ball big time.

OMG...my apologies. I forgot to mention Bernadette Peters. Wouldn't want to be virtually b*tch slapped by her stalkers fans on here.

Posted: 5/28/12 at 11:28pmI've never seen the stage show or know much about how it differs from the movie versions, but the 1999 version has ALWAYS held it down for me! The 1982 version just pales in comparison to the remake, although there are a few good moments. I do like "Sign".

The story line just gets a little ridiculous towards the end, while I'm pretty sure the 1999 sticks true to the stage production pretty well I may be missing something, but I think the only time the 1999 film strays for the stage version is a few changes to NYC, "You Won't Be an Orphan for Long," "We'd Like to Thank You Herbert Hoover," and "A New Deal for Christmas" are cut, and it ends on a reprise of "I Don't Need Anything But You," which I think works better than a reprise of "Tomorrow" at the end.

I guess I'm in the minority of people who prefer the '82 version. The '99 one felt very sterile and fake to me. I couldn't get emotionally invested and didn't find Kathy Bates funny at all.
The '82 version really got the point that Annie herself was a bright spot during the Great Depression. Also I thought the production numbers in the original film were fantastic. Warbuck's mansion is truly impressive and the orphanage felt sprawling and decrepit.
I applaud the '99 version for sticking far closer to the original stage musical, and I did enjoy parts of it. I'm definitely excited to see the revival:)
