Have there been any plans to make this into a stage musical? I think the movie would translate so well onto stage, so why isnt it there already? Thanks

Has this started to be filmed yet, and has any further casting been announced?

Burton's film is not a musical. He is making CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, not WILLY WONKA.

I believe the MTI show in development is Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory JUNIOR - meaning it is a one-hour adaptation which can only be performed by children and teens under 18.

There's been some buzz about adapting the film, in light of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG and how well it's doing in London. But that buzz has been around for a couple of years now, so I doubt we'll see much beyond talk in the next little while.

There's also an operatic version, called THE GOLDEN TICKET, that had a workshop production in Minnesota about a year and a half ago. Written by a team from London, it's got some great material in it. Last I heard, NYCO was interested in it.

It's too bad that the new movie isn't going to be a musical -- tha's my favorite part of the whole show! I think it would be a great on stage. And I think Johnny Depp is going to be a GREAT Willy Wonka.

Oh, and when the original was being made, it was going to be Charly and the Chocolate Factory but they changed it because Charly is slang for a slave trader.

I love "cry baby." I think that would make an EXCELLENT broadway musical. I mean, if Hairspray can become a hit, then this should have noooooo problem

Am I the only that would want kill to see David Rockwell( Hairspray, Rocky Horror, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) design this show on Broadway. His sets always have surprises built in (people popping out of posters, Tracy-shaped prison breaks) that I can't even imagine how amazing his designs would be for this show.

He'll be a HOT willy wonka rather than a freaky one. Interesting...

"Oh, and when the original was being made, it was going to be Charly and the Chocolate Factory but they changed it because Charly is slang for a slave trader. "

The title of the movie was changed to reflect the focus of the film and the star, Gene Wilder.

Good try though.
