Without Mentioning Any Names....

Short response to the recent thought - Stephen and Winnie have both talked at length about finding a language, both musically and lyrically, that is unique and consistent within the world they are creating. As this is definitely a 'fantasy' world they're dealing with, I think that pretty much explains the lyrics you have referenced. As to the subject of this thread, I must respectfully disagree. I know there are people who can appreciate the most cerebral of endeavors, as well as the most mindless of fluff pieces - accepting them on the terms in which they present themselves. I, for one, am one of those people. The biggest delineation I see going on here is between people who insist on seeing things in their own terms, and people who are wlling to allow the experience of others around them - no matter how contrary to their own ideologies that may be. On this board I see everything from the youngest neophyte in the world of theatre to a Tony winner. But the biggest chasm seems to occur between those who judge others by their experience, and those who accept them for what they are and share their own thoughts - hopefully with the goal of mutual growth and awareness. The continual snide comments only serve to reinforce the sterotype of the bitter, cynical elitist attitude that keeps people away from this art form. Not that I can't appreciate humor, but castigation of someone because of their emotional reponse to anything in life only serves to tell us how out of touch you are with the concept of the interconnectedness of us all. Villify a piece, if you must - but harping about how some are wrong to feel the way they do removes you from the web of humanity that binds us all - and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Even if they are Namo.

Short response?

Nonetheless, I agree with you.
(and I enjoy the newly-created words.
It helps to make the world of Oz more complete.
Kinda like J.K. Rowling did with Harry Potter.)

Just so you know, I said 'short response' to the recent thought - which only took up one sentence. The rest of the post was about the thread itself - and admitedly not very 'short.' I'm on a bit of a soapbox about this, at the moment. I'm sure I, like many others, will be beaten into submission by the board watchdogs.

DGrant reeks of fecal matter also.

BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"

So, I re-read my messages to see what prompted that response - and I really do sound like a big blowhard. The funny thing is, even though I regret HOW I said things, I don't regret WHAT I said. So, like a stinking pile of s*** I'll be - but at least I own it, and will never be unwilling to discuss any of it.

DGrant... i don't think you sounded like a blowhard at all... i agree that we need to allow others' experiences... i, for one, like to think of myself as more of the "cerebral" theater-goer, but can also lose myself in the fun of a show like Mamma Mia, which, i might add, when i saw it just after it opened, i enjoyed fully, as did the audience around me... i went to see this show expecting to just have a good time, and i did... when i went to see Wicked, having read the book, i was expecting something a bit darker, with a message more akin to the book, regarding the basis of evil, rather than a show regarding two sorority sisters from UC Berkeley... You must have ignored the apparently second conversation Winnie and Stephen had where Schwartz said 'aw, screw it, I'll just write a bunch of songs that sound like all my other songs. If vague sixties folk/pop songs were good enough for Jesus, Noah and Pippin, they're certainly good enough for The Wicked Witch of the West.'

I can;t see that happening at UCBerkely - instead of tanning it would be

"Like, you wanna go clean beaches?"

"Sure, my environment-friendly car of yours?"

I think it would take place more at UCLA. Actually, USC.

But it was still funny.
