I have seen the show 4x but I have failed to realize what Marian's secret is! At the end after she redeems Walter's pledge and Laura gives her Anne's shawl she says something like : (after she belts "I close my eyes"
"Everything has changed. Everything's now altered. As long as I live its All for Laura Now I have a Secret" - Marian says that
yeah...i think her secret is that she is in love with Walter, and who could blame her? hehe

The secret is that she will live All For Laura and let her go. The secret may also include her love of Walter. Great question!
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
To Kill A Mockingbird
Didn't she tell Walter how she felt? And didn't she release Walter from his commitment ( he did make a pledge to live his life with her, before they found Laura) so he could go back to Laura?
I miss THE WOMAN IN WHITE already ( aka THE SECRETS )!
*The Woman in White (Anne Catherick) had a secret - her relationship with Glyde with whom she had a child *Marian had an unrequited love for Walter *Percival Glyde was titled but actually impoverished ( which he kept from Laura) *Count Fosco - was outwardly charming but was the real villain *The Uncle - knew about his brother's secret liaisons
*Laura and Walter were taken with each other -- but kept their feelings secret and took some time to express their romantic interest.
Oh my god...im praying for this show to tour. A masterpiece!!! many people saw the show and hated it. I think if anyone takes the time to listen to the cd, there are so many beautiful melodies, it's amazing. I wonder why people didn't go to see this show?

Muscle - short answer -- Because it was easier for some people to jump on the bandwagon of people who dislike anything Webber than to be open to a genuine musical drama. I for one appreciate the sophisticated score and a show that was moving, dark, intriguing rather than the usual par for the course of Broadway lately which seems all musical comedy/jukebox musicals.
As for the topic itself - I think the secret is that Walter had Pledged to be with Marian and that she freed him of that pledge - while everytime she closes her eyes "... I still his face..."
I think you have a valid point. For whatever reason, which escapes me, there are people who plain do not like whatever ALW does. They are entitled to their opinion. But personally, I thought Woman In White was brilliant. Innovative. Original. Great voices. Great music. Great characters, esp. Marian and Fosco. And the more I think about it the more I believe Fosco was a great character of musical theatre. I thought those involved should be very proud of their work.
I saw the show in February, and was sitting next to a group of elderly women. When Marian sang this part, one of the women turned to one of her friends and said, "What IS her secret?" To which the other woman instantly replied, "Oh, she's pregnant."
