Posted: 8/12/10 at 12:15amHave you seen the film? I haven't but I have seen a number of Almodovar's other films and they are all very explicit. I didn't watch them until college and don't think I would have gotten anything out of them in high school. I'm sure that an American adaptation will make it a little tamer, but I probably still wouldn't count on it being appropriate for high schoolers. If you HS students are interested in theater and would be eager to see all of the big Broadway names in the cast, it will surely be a showcase of wonderful talent!

Posted: 8/12/10 at 12:19amWe watched the movie in my senior Spanish class and it was fine. We'd actually seen stuff that was racier and more explicit in previous years.

Well there is an orgy scene in Act II that involves the sacrifice of a baby goat (they use real animals, btw) and then of course there is the infamous ping-pong ball scene.
Those were both added for the musical though, so they aren't in the movie.

I saw the movie in high school, literally, in my high school. They would have different rooms with different movies on Halloween and I remember that was one that was screened.
Plus, think about it, do you think any Broadway production nowadays would want to eliminate the family audience from seeing a commercial musical? It might be edgy but it will not be vulgar or overtly explicit. I'm sure it will be fine unless you have particularly sheltered or unsophisticated high school student on your hands.

God I hope so. At least occasionally. Not EVERYTHING has to be "family" friendly.

Posted: 8/12/10 at 10:14pmIt's a business. I'm not saying it will be a children's musical but the production would be unwise to make this musical only for people above the age of 20.

Posted: 8/12/10 at 10:16pmThis is a non-profit Lincoln Center production. It's not a "commercial production."

Posted: 8/12/10 at 11:27pmAnd so, of course, because it's a subsidized production you think they don't think about drawing in the largest audience possible? There is nothing inherent in the source material that should exclude an American teenage audience and this adaptation should be no different.

Posted: 8/13/10 at 7:37amThe film is much less explicit than Almodovar's other work. It is appropriate for HSers, and I would imagine the musical would be too.
