It's one of Bernstein's worst shows written by Comden and Green.
It's about a lesbian...oops, sorry...
It's about a Tomboyishly woman and her pretty sister who move to New York from Ohio, and they sing a horrible song that goes like "Why-o Why-o Why-o did I ever leave Ohio"?
And they try to survive.
It has a typical Boy meets girl, boy likes girl's sister Love story that pretty much concludes with a snap of the finger.

Break a leg.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

First he likes the pretty one.
Then he realizes that he likes the Tomboyish one.
But that comes out of nowhere.

It is a big dance show. Honestly, "Swing" is the only really good number.

Thanks, Justice. With objective reporting like that, future generations will wonder why the heck people bothered going to Broadway musicals in the first place.

That's "Swing", a number in the show, yes. It's wonderful but when seen out of context can seem a little odd.

I happen to think it's a lovely story and a pretty good show. I especially love the score. I hope you get a good part!

It really is a wonderful show. It's just a good old fashioned musical. There are some people on here of a younger generation that think that if it's not Wicked or Rent, then it's crap. What they don't realize is that if it wasn't for these "Goldie Oldies," there would be no Wicked or Rent.

So, go audition. I hope you get it and I dare you not to fall in love with the show. And I hope that as you continue to mature that you will learn that you really can't trust anyone's opinion but your own.

You want to be in the show, but have not bothered to read the script or listened to the numerous recordings available? Perhaps you'd be better prepared for the audition by going to the library and doing some research rather than chatting with nuts like Justice.

Wonderful Town is a great show.

The musical is based on the writing of Ruth McKenney. If you want to research the story, rent the movie "My Sister Eileen"

In my point of view,it was the best show of the year, besides it documents the comeback on the broadway scene of Brooke Shields."Swing" was a great number...but "Conga" ,"Wrong note rag","Christopher Street","Conquering New York","A quiet girl","It's love","Ballet at the Villgae Vortex" were amazing numbers as well as the overture and the finale.Sparky they sell the CD of the show at the virgin megastore for 14.99 with Brooke Shields and Jennifer Hope Wills in it.

i liked Brooke and Jennifer Hope Wills better....i don't know why Donna is praised...i thought she wasnt good in the role at all.....and i did see her in it.... the show was weak and the theatre was empty.no one clapped.i think she Donna is a great actress...but as a singer she is not that good, maybe Brooke is not a great singer either...but she was way funnier.

Really? I saw it early in the run with Donna and she stopped the show and got huge applause! Brooke shields on the other had was campier, and I found her performance not nearly as strong as Donna's. Donna's singing voice is also MUCH stronger then Brooke could ever hope to have.

The song One Hundred Easy Ways is a great female comic song.

i think if you would compare Brooke to ....Lea Salonga or Kristin Chenoweth... i would tell you that they were definitly better singers...but Donna didnt impress me at all...Donna is a great actress...but a great singer? i didnt think so....Brooke got standing ovations like i have never seen.

Well to refresh my memory I listened to clips from when Brooke was in wonderful town compared with Donna. Brooke shield's recording is a very flat performance (both energy and key). Donna had a lot more energy and really made the part (and recording) soar.

Brooke is not the best singer on Bway ...no doubt....but i did think that was the best job she has done in her career.Well...she was very funny in "suddenly susan" too.

I'm glad you enjoyed her. I just greatly prefer Donna inthe role and suggest someone wanting to listen to a recording to go with Donna's.

How can anyone say that Donna Murphy is not a great singer?? I know I'm a little biased, cause I happen to LOVE her voice- But anyone with good hearing will tell you that she is not only a good singer but a PHENOMENAL one.

I think your love of Brooke Shields is blinding you. Get over it - some people, including me, think Donna Murphy was much, much better in the role. Just because you love Brooke doesn't mean you have to continually bash Donna.
