re: Wonderful Town

i dont bash her...i say she is a great actress...but her singing doesnt impress me....i do love Brooke....but when she took over the role of Ruth,i went to see the show for the 1st time and thought"what did Brooke got herself into?" im sure she is going to suck....and then....i realized not only was she good...but she was better than the original...well...that was my opinion and i have the right to express it!

re: Wonderful Town

Well Linda was my favorite, but let's not get into that. Wonderful Town is a great show and I love it. I would say to get the Donna version of the recording though. It's funny and has a lot of heart. I hope you enjoy whatever you end up doing with the show.

re: Wonderful Town

i dont know if we r just Brooke's fans or what...but my friend and me went to see the show together and bought Donna's and Brooke's versions and we never listen to Donna's.

re: Wonderful Town

It is probably because you are brooke fans. I cannot listen to the Brooke version, I dislike it!

re: Wonderful Town

I listened to snippets of Brooke's recording on Amazon and absolutely CRINGED. I refuse to waste my money on it. I'm perfectly happy with Donna's recording, which is wonderful.

But yes, let's agree to disagree...this argument isn't going anywhere, and it will only serve to make us lash out more. The important thing is that we both liked the show a lot.

re: Wonderful Town

I just can't believe you two wasted all that time argueing back and forth about Donna vs. Brooke in a thread. Neither one of you was going to convince the other that you were right. It was pointless and a waste of space and energy.

In the future carry those out in PM's.

re: Wonderful Town

Excuse me? Have you READ some of the threads around here? And, with all due respect, you're not my mother so please don't try and educate me.

I wanted to express my opinion amid the Donna Murphy bashing that has been going on for months. It was done publicly, so I chose to respond publicly. I don't regret it.

That said, I give Rob and Craig full permission to delete my posts or remove them to the off-topic board, if they so desire. I won't be offended in the least.

re: Wonderful Town

Bwaylover you are not out of line at all. The three of us were having a discussion of which version we like better and why. It was not verbally abusive at all.

re: Wonderful Town

No one has mentioned the 1999 Studio Cast recording with Audra McDonald as Eileen and Kim Criswell as Ruth. Also starring Thomas Hampson. I haven't heard the other recordings (except the original cast from 1953 with Rosalind Russell which is decent) but the 1999 recording is terrific. The show itself is very entertaining and funny, although I haven't seen it since the 70's in a college production.

re: Wonderful Town

By the way, Tom...
I have been performing in musicals loooong before Rent and Wicked. re: Wonderful Town
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

re: Wonderful Town

I must say if I got to put the two broadway shows together, I'd be happy. I'd go for Donna Murphy anyday. I think swing was amazing. Have you ever seen the music to that song. It could have been boring but the impressions of all the jazz greats and pop celebrities of the day are priceless. I prefer Jennifer hope Wills though. When I saw the original revival cast, ms Westfeldt or whatever her name is annoyed the crap outta me. She was a terrible singer AND they lowered all that coloratura stuff for her. Why not find someone who cans sing that?! I too have the Audra recording and she sang it flawlessly. However Audra in this role is a bit problematic LOL. On the Audra recording however, the conductor takes the tempos waaaay too fast and it's annoying. I say buy the Donna Murphey one. That's my 2 cents

re: Wonderful Town

I found jennifer westfeld annoying too...and donna was annoying too...and too ugly.Even tho Ruth isnt supposed to be pretty. It made me sad, because i could totally see her being rejected by every man.Im evil ,i admit it.

re: Wonderful Town

If someone wants to get a feel for the show then I would go with the recording with Donna Murphy. I am now a Donna Murphy fan but I also like Brooke Shields. I would just like to say that when I saw Wonderful Town for the first time I didn't know who Donna Murphy was but, after the show I looked in the playbill and read Donna Murphy's biography, then looked up her other credits...she won me over in that role. She made me want to see everything else that she had ever been in. I understand that others get that affect from seeing other shows... this is just my view.
As far as learning about the show, I do think that Donna Murphys recording is better. And about Jennifer Westfeldt, I did like Jennifer Hope Wills better, but I also saw Jennifer Westfeldts understudy and that made me realize how good Jennifer Westfeldt was when she was in the role.
I have seen it 6 times (weird, I know) but I have also seen it with different casts.
I don't need a response to this, this is just my opinion. Wonderful Town is a great show. The music is wonderful hehe. Any recording would give you the feel for the show, but you know how I feel.
