WONDERFUL TOWN? You people have not seen a lot of theater. Here are some of the worst shows I have seen: 1. The Music Teacher. I love Wallace Shaw but what happened here? 2. Bklyn The Musical 3. Vincent The Musical 4. Prymate 5. In My Life There are so many more. Some of the best this season: 1. Grey Gardens 2. Bernarda Alba 3. The Color Purple 4. Jersey Boys 5. Title of Show 6. Rabbit Hole
I love the cd to rent and it's potential but i was jadded by all the hype.... i just wasn't fond of the way it was staged, and i saw a bad cast.
As for Wicked, The book is just a terror to me and when i saw it in January i disliked most of the cast with the exception of Nessa and The Wizard ( George Hearn was filling in). Also we had a talk back with the cast and i kinda lost a lot of respect that the stagemanagers didn't even know the directoral concept of the show or what meaning the set had to the piece.
A high school production of "The Crucible". Granted, they WERE in high school, but I couldn't hear two words that half the characters said, most of the lines that were loud enough were delivered in a monotone, and Elizabeth Proctor burst out laughing at a very serious moment.
I haven't actually seen it, but after being in 2 productions of Footloose, I'm convinced it has one of the worst books of all time. How the hell did it EVER make it to Broaday? Just dreadful.

StageManager2 - Yes, it was a musical spoof of The Poseidon Adventure, which could have been lots of fun, but the score was terribly weak. Several people were miscast (they tried genderbending casting and it worked for one role, but not the others). And they used a narrative device of a group of Poseidon Adventure fans meeting at a party and sharing their favorite memories of the film between scenes that was totally unecessary and bogged the show down even further. It had a couple of clever moments, but for the most part, was just uninspired silliness lacking in wit. I will say, however, that the guy who played Noni was absolutely brilliant and gave not only the best performance in the show, but one of the best performances in Chicago that year. He was the only reason I stayed for the second act.
And for the record, I love Mamma Mia. I've seen it three times and will definitely see it again. It's not Sondheim (but then, only Sondheim is Sondheim), but it is energetic, entertaining, and contains a plethora of internationally beloved songs. What's not to like? And though I know it's eveyone's favorite target, Cats is not really that bad. A good production of Cats can be great, but a bad production can indeed be a nightmare.
And I will add Thou Shalt Not and the Broadway production of Jekyll and Hyde to my list.
