I saw BOMBAY DREAMS for the second time last night, and I still found it a lot of fun. The first act is better than the second, but the songs are infectious, and the performers are charismatic and I noticed the vocals are a lot better than when I saw the first preview (put that down to nerves). Is it as emotionally satisfying as CAROLINE (which I also saw for the second time the previous night)? No, but there should be a place on Broadway for both shows. I really don't understand the hostility aimed at BD. My sense is that the critcs already had their reviews written before they saw the show.
"No such thing. To each his own."
We say that then criticize someone for liking something the majority of the board dislikes.
"The Boy from Oz" ::dodges punches:: I'm saying it was the worst show. What it did not have, however, was a bad lead performance. I <3 Hugh just as much as you, or you, or yea, even you, but the SHOW was...::shudders::
Rent.
Wicked.
I like wicked's book and lyrics too.
um...
worst musical that i've seen that's out now? Movin' Out.
Musical that I'd rather not see the most? Bombay Dreams. Just...i dont know.
I liked Bombay Dreams
And Dracula is not as Bad as everybody think
Dracula - to use the Post's headline - "It Sucks." Bombay Dreams is a very close second. I also have to agree that The Boy from Oz is not a very good show in and of itself, but you do get to see a couple of fine performances from Jackman & Block
In my opion, the pulitzer prize winning "Rent", while not suiting all tastes, if far from the worst show on broadway. Especially when compared to shows like "Beauty and the Beast", "Mamma Mia" and "Wicked". Sorry, had to refute.
"Mamma Mia." I saw it, for the slight chance that I might like it. Needless to say, I wasted 60 bucks. At least I liked one aspect of "The Lion King" (the costumes and puppets). "Mamma Mia" was just overall sucky.
And why all the hate over "Beauty and the Beast"? I'm not attacking anyone; just curious.
Boy From OZ and Wonderful Town...
I thought Bombay Dreams was a lot of fun. Its just different- very much like a Bollywood Film. My sister described it as Mamma Mia, but with Indians...eh...

As for Wicked's book, I thought it was very clever the way they incorporated the Wizard Of Oz ("What's in the punch?" "Apples and lemons and pears" "oh my!"). The book i thought was kinda feh.
I cant say which is the worst havent seen all of them. So i am not going to pick one that the majority seems to dislike.
IM ASKING A FAVOR!!!
Can we only comment on shows we saw? I heard a couple things like "I have heard that ______ was bad.
If you have seen a show and dont like it (for example: Dracula) thats fine, but If you haven't seen it, don't spread any negativity.
Thank You

The Boy From Oz was pretty bad in Australia, and they were supposed to fix it for Broadway! How much money must a show like Bombay Dreams be losing, a week?

Must we have yet another thread that only focuses on and emphasizes the negative? A half dozen shows are closing and the RNC's in town playing havoc on the box office and tourist trade for every play and musical still running, not to mention every restaurant and bar, retail establishment etc... and we, who supposedly love theatre, are going to go out of our way to slam the few theatrical entities in town still managing to stay open???
Whatever..... have fun being bitchy, but at this particular moment in time, I don't see the point ..............

Thank you Margo! I was going to say something earlier, but then decided against it. BUT, since you brought it up - I absolutely agree! It's similar to all the negativity thrown at each other around here - and my question to them is the same you just asked here - WHY? As yet, no answer . . .
I agree with some of those points. But one must be critical, or else we will slowly be stuck with nothing but mediocrity.

Priest - There is a difference between informed critical analysis and mocking.
And besides, if everything were alike, then nothing would stand out. I prefer to accept things in the spirit they were intended. To use the example so oft referenced here, when I saw Wicked I got exactly what I anticipated - a spectacle. And frankly, it was thrilling, if for no other reason than to experience the excitement of the audience. When I see a Sondheim work, I usually get what I expect - thoughtful and challenging art.
Relativity within the realm of creation really doesn't mean that much to me. NO musical - even one by the vaunted Sondheim - can ever match the thrill of experiencing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony performed live. So what? Everything has its point and place, and tearing it down serves no purpose other than to deny the pleasure to those who desire it.
Agreed. Perhaps I misinterpreted what you and Margo were getting at. It seemed like you both were being critical of people being critical of shows, when in fact you were just being critical of people who pointlessly and endlessly bash shows with out much constructive critiscm to follow.
My mistake.

I agree with keeping standards high, but right now here in New York, everything's closing, nothing's opening, and the shows that are here and open are going to struggle for the next couple of weeks/months (even the hits are going to face a major downturn). Security in town is already getting crazy (in addition to the NYPD, we have the national guard, federal troops and the state militia here -- tens of thousands of extra cops on the street) and when I was out a couple of hours ago, police helicopters were shining beacons on a protest downtown, along with low flying planes and a blimp in the sky. There are unmarked cars and nonuniform cops patrolling the city block by block and god knows what is going to happen noon on Sunday when the major protest rally scheduled to go by Madison Square Garden at noon is going to let out at Union Square -- they're expecting 250,000 protestors and, at best, Union Square can hold perhaps 10,000 people (for some stupid reason the city wouldn't allow a rally in Central Park which is the only place in Manhattan that can actually handle a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people). This is all a recipe for pure chaos and anarchy -- it's going to be a disaster before the RNC even starts on Monday. Of course, this doesn't even address the potential for some horrific terrorist action or the planned protests becoming violent and out of hand.
The entire friggin city is under siege right now, and here on BWW a bunch of kids from around the country think this is a good time to yammer on about "Ooo, Wicked sucks" and "Wonderful Town sucks" and "Rent sucks"...... in a thread where the one and only point of it is to be negative and mean and nasty and bitchy towards the handful of shows that have bucked the odds and found a way to run for the next few months of lousy business before the tourists really return in November and December.
Sorry, but I don't see the point of a thread entitled "re: Worst Show on Broadway now..." considering what a nightmare New York is at the moment.
But, whatever. I'm not a censor and support your right to complain endlessly and inanely about whatever you want from your safe havens out of town -- free country. Those of us here, trying desperately to support the arts in this city in this current time of crisis and financial meltdown have different priorities (personally I've seen three shows in the Fringe Festival this week, and have tickets to see a concert tomorrow and Caroline's closing on Sunday, plus tickets for two plays next week during the RNC).
I won't be reading this thread any longer. Have a good week!
Wonderful Town is incredible.
Dracula is my pick for the biggest let down.
SOB. I LOVE TOM.
But I really enjoyed:
Mamma Mia
Wonderful Town
Bombay Dreams (Not deep but a lot of fun. I was amused)
Support New York City theater.
I can not support Dracula though. I really hated it!

I too like the book of Wicked. Its very funny and touching. However, if you must compare it to Maguire's novel, the book sucks lol. If you look at the book (the script) as a seperate entity, as it is because its so different, I think its great.
My worst musical, or one I've heard the worse about, it Dracula. I've also heard Mamma Mia is bad, but it makes SOOO much money, it can't be that bad.

Yeah, one thing you cant do is compare it. I mean people dont compare Oklahoma to Green Grow The Lilacs, and people still love it. Idk. I can see why some people dont like it though. I was watching and have to say, I think some parts are sposed to be kinda silly....verging on stupid. I think they wanted to make the serious parts, not as serious. Idk if that makes sense lol. Anyway, Bombay Dreams actually looks pretty good although I have not seen it. Just curious, what's so bad about it? Thanks :)
