Would A Nerdy White Suburban Chick Enjoy "In The Heights?"

Wow, $200 for seats that cost ~$50 each? Are you staying overnight? Or does the bus ride/rental cost ~$150 per person? Where are you traveling from, OP?
I finally saw In the Heights this past February, and while I didn't think it was as awesome as some folks had told me it was, it was a thoroughly enjoyable show. The numbers that feature the entire cast were my favorite and the dancing is fun. I do enjoy the cast recording. I haven't taken Spanish in ten years (and even then, it was basic) and I had no problem with the Spanish bits. It has a typical musical storyline involving a Dream. I can understand the cost holding you back, but don't let the show itself do so.

Jennamajig-- I think they're providing two meals for us, too. Which I almost wish they weren't, because I could bring two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from home for free. But we're not staying overnight.
B3TA07-- Hahaha, I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or an insult, but let me reassure you that that creature in my avatar is NOT ME. I pretty much always have a Terrence Mann avatar, but contrary to popular belief, I'm not him!
Thanks for the reassuring words about the show! It sounds like I got put off by the fact that Usnavi raps and didn't look past that. Cost is still the biggest issue, but now I'm more likely to plead my case to my parents, that's for sure.

Posted: 9/22/09 at 10:09pmI've seen the show twice. Both times with the original cast. Fantastic show. A must see in my opinion. Although it takes place in a Latino neighborhood, I found the story to be universal and could apply to any race of people that immigrated to the United States.

"Nerdy white suburban chick."
That's me. And I loved this show. Sure, there are things that will reverberate more for Latino audience members, but it's 100% relatable anyway, and it's good theater. Why only stick to things that specifically reflect your experience? Open your mind a little.

The rap show.
Wow.

Posted: 9/22/09 at 10:36pmI hated most of this show unless the female leads were singing. I know Im in the minority, but I thought this show was tripe and I couldn't understand a damn word Lin-Manuel sang/rapped/garbled.

I really loved the show but ya know? I'd say don't. $200.00 is a lot of money in this economy and it sounds as tho your folks ( who love you and want you to be happy) might have some difficulty in making this happen. I hate pressure esp when you can get the cast recording at BCEFA for 10.00. There will be other shows & trips.
But your call. You know your situation best.

Posted: 9/23/09 at 6:56pmI hate R&B/Rap music, but I love the score to this show. It's a really diverse, fun score and I wouldn't pass up the chance to see it. It didn't win 'Best Musical' for nothing! It's a charming, fun, and touching show...go see it.

And sorry Jazzy, but if it won Best Musical was because it was the show which had the most commercial appeal, certainly not the best that year.
Two other musicals got across the boards rave reviews that season and were much more deserving of the award.

My best friend (Dominican and actually born and raised in the heights) LOVED it.
I (not dominican; but Italian) enjoyed it alot myself.
The score has some really great songs and the set is very unique. The end of act 2 dragged a tad for my liking, but none the less I enjoyed it still.
There is some spanish but it is not alot at all that is going to affect your understanding of the plot and what is going on.
200 bucks for the last row though however is a jip.
My friend and my self got 3rd Orch. seats for close too 150 (with discount code) for the set.

Posted: 9/23/09 at 11:47pmBecause I am not American/New Yorker or from any of the communities in the show, and speak no Spanish, found a lot of the jokes flew over my head. I think it really appeals to a different demographic to your usual Broadway crowd, and that's a good thing, but that was difficult for me - plus on top of that the book was sliver-thin, almost as bad as We Will Rock You. But the songs were on the most part really wonderful. I do plan to buy the soundtrack on iTunes eventually!
