Posted: 4/16/07 at 4:08pmAida won best score because two of the Best Musical nominees (Contact and Swing) were not eligible. So all "Best Score" means is that they liked the score better than The Dead or Wild Party's score - not that the show over all was as good as any of the nominees.

I can not believe I have to defend Aida-- one of my least favorite shows.
However-- Aida was NOT nominated for best Musical as a giant F YOU to Disney, Elton John and the "outsiders" who were seen as a previously unstoppable juggernaught. I have to think there was still a lot of bitterness over Lion King's win, so they gauranteed that Aida WOULD NOT win the big prize, even if it meant nominating shows that had closed and had earned few if any other nods.
When all the dust cleared, Aida won more awards than any other show and was denied a performance shot on the show.
God the Tony committee is a bunch of bitter babies.
And to the question: ABSOLUTELY it would have won.

Posted: 4/16/07 at 5:33pmPersoanlly, I would have given Aida's nomination slot for Best Score to Marie Christine. I enjoed The Dead more than Aida. I thought Aida was a bright colorful silly mess.
