If AIDA had been nominated, do you think it would have won?

The nominees were:

CONTACT
JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD
SWING!
THE WILD PARTY

If AIDA had been nominated over ANY of those shows, I seriously think it would have won.

I think it would have.

But... why wasn't it? I still might pick Wild Party, though.

Possibly, yes, it could have. It still amazes me how a show could win best score but is not even nominated for best musical.

I would pick CONTACT or THE WILD PARTY, but still...

It wasn't nominated because, I guess the nominators liked the other shows better.

CONTACT really was visually very appealing and the dancers were quite excellent.

But BEST MUSICAL? No. I would have definitely voted for AIDA.

I think also the nominating committee still held something of a grudge against Disney.

^ Someone had to say it! The critics royally trashed it. That certainly played a part.

Did they have Best Special Theatrical Event yet? I would have nominated and voted for AIDA despite its flaws, and nominated and voted for CONTACT for Best Special Theatrical Event. Same with LION KING. I would have voted for RAGTIME and given LION KING Best Special Theatrical Event.

I'm not talking about whether it deserved to be nominated or not. AIDA was god-awful. But the fact remains...if they committe had voted it in, i think it probably would have won.

I think "god-awful" is EXTREMELY harsh. Very problematic but the show has many many merits. Read the "Aida Revival?" thread and we've talked about the show in-depth.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I don't need to read through a thread...I saw the show, and I know that I thought it was pretty bad.

Okay, to say the show had its flaws and wasn't your favorite is one thing. But, in my opinion, by NO MEANS was it awful. It had some very admirable components and, tho not flawless, was still a fine peice of theater.

Yes, believe it or not, it is still one of my favorite musicals. And YES I do believe it would have been voted best musical had it gotten the nomination. Furthermore, in my opinion it would have deserved it. If not the Tony, at LEAST the nomination.

I don't know if it deserved to win, but I think it would have won simly because out of the other nominees, it was the most commercial.

No.

AIDA is trash.

CONTACT was wonderful, WILD PARTY was intelligent. A tough toss up imo.

I agree, but the question isn't "What was better?"

AIDA is the perfect tourist trap type musical that they would vote for. I think that based on the history of the Tonys, it's sort of undeniable that AIDA would have won if it had been nominated.

Didn't it win every other category it was nominated in?
perhaps the TONY voters would have disagreed with the nominators.
I didn't think it was God awful

Yeah. I understand the opinion that the show sucks, but you can't really say something wasn't nominated for a Tony because it was god-awful if it was nominated in five categories and won in four. If it sucked that much it wouldnt be nominated at all

You clearly have NO idea about the process and politics surrounding the Tonys.

In 2000 the Tony voters nominated more artistic shows which was fabulous. I wish it would happen more often.

To actually answer the question, yes, think it would have won.
