Q, I'm not really against an ensemble award, I'm ambivalent about it (which is probably why my post is confusing). I guess my approach would be for Actor's Equity to give a special award to the ensemble that should be presented at the Tonys, so the recipients would not get Tonys but instead a special award presented to them during the ceremony. It makes little sense, but it's just the only way I can think about approaching it.
It's too hard to figure out the logistics for it. For example, I really dislike the fact that the Drama Desk gives an Ensemble award sometimes but then the actors from that production immediately become ineligible for individual recognition.
The examples I gave are ones where I thought that not only did every single person in the main ensemble deserved to be recognized but mainly casts that complemented each other and were too strong as a group to single out a "best" performance. What I'm against is the idea of an all-inclusive Best Ensemble award where for example, every person down to the chorus member with no lines would become a Tony winner.
Who would take home that tony?
The producers. I have mixed feelings about the whole ensemble award. I think though Reba would have won a replacement award or maybe Fantasia.
There really should be one for Best Play Script. Musicals get Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score, while plays only get Best Play. What if you've got an absolutely freakin' amazing script but the production is rubbish? It's not fair that the playwright shouldn't be recognised if the cast and crew aren't up to scratch. XP
Weez, I completely agree.
I've always liked the idea of a Best Replacement category, along with Best Ensemble. And potentially Best Understudy? Haha.
