I hope this hasnt been already posted but heres my two cents.
I am aware that the Tonys only nominates new shows that opened in that season but I thought that Possibly a "Best Replacment catergory" or something like that would be cool to see.
I mean sometimes when diffrent people take over the show can get much worse but also much better. A example that sticks in my mind is Scarlett Strallen in Mary Poppins. I believe if she was in the original Broadway cast she would have been nominated for a Tony yet because she is a replacment she does not get any recognition dispite her amazing performance (The show itself is decent but you would want to see it just for her).
I just think it would be cool for the Tonys to have a special award recognizing the people who took over a role. Taking over is just as (maybe even harder) than originatin the role because you dont want to be a exact copy of what the originator did so you have to think of little ways to spice up your role and make it fitting to you
This actually used to be a category, if I remember correctly.
Not really: then the producers would have to start giving out even MORE free tickets.

It was created and then un-created when nobody in the brain trust could figure out how to approach it.
I personally would have liked it to have been a catagory. I believe the year it was being created, Jon Pryce would have recieved one for DRS and that would have been A-OK with me.
He would have, but he didn't - instead they announced that no one was worth winning the category. Mr. Pryce made fun of the awards and the category and in a few weeks it was gone

It WAS a category that year. They said that nobody deserved it. It'd be a great category if they could do it right.
I think they should have a best ensemble award.

^ Agreed!
Now that they got rid of the Special Theatrical Event award, I doubt they will be in the mood to experiment again with adding categories any time soon.
Never going to happen. If you want an award do the original production.
I actually felt that she (Strallen) was merely good while the show was slightly above her (in levels of awesome).
And no it won't ever happen...in the mean time, how about a Sluttiest Ensemble Member award
That's what I thought, but what if we gave the bottoms a separate category?
I agree a best ensemble award would be nice. And while the tony comittee disagreed about someone being eligible I believe not only that year but the last few there have been many people worthy of this award. For instance the men of speed the plow, Pryce as i had already mentioned, Eileen Atkins in doubt, Judy Kaye in Sweeney Todd while she replaced Patti for a short while, Laura Osnes in South Pacific, Will Chase in Rent etc. Had the comittee gone about it in a better way it could have been a good award.
Why do we need a best ensemble award? That's what the best dressed lists are for.
I wish there was one for Best Music Direction, but thats one of those things you don't notice unless it's bad.
I know that there's a push right now for Best Casting Director. What do you think about that?
Best Ensemble award is an awful idea.
Tony voters don't even manage to see every new show and revival that opens each season...can we really expect them to go see every show everytime there's a replacement?
I think Best Casting is awful. It would sort of get lumped under the whole "best musical" or "best play" category. I mean, the casting certainly helps with that.

Please forward your thoughts to SAG.
A Best Ensemble Tony is not a good idea because then anyone really could be a Tony winner. I mean, the little Scavo boys from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES have been nominated (and maybe even won, I can't remember) a SAG Award! How ridiculous is that?
I've said this before, but I wish Equity gave an Ensemble award that was presented at the Tonys. The award would be much like the SAG Award where the producers decide which of their actors are considered part of the ensemble. I think a show like IN THE HEIGHTS for example would have been deserving (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrea Burns, Karen Olivo, Mandy Gonzales, Olga Merediz, Christopher Jackson, Priscilla Lopez, Janet Dacal, Eliseo Roman, et al are a really strong ensemble, too difficult to single out). Also, something like AUGUST: OC should have been given a special Tony for its ensemble, same for HAIR.

ray - I'm confused. You seem to be arguing against ensemble awards because of who might get honored that is unworthy. But then you give examples of what might be good ensemble award recipients.
The whole point of recognizing an ensemble is to say that the work of the GROUP is note-worthy, even down to the 'weakest link'.
Do you, perhaps, recommend only giving a group award when the groups (in their entirety) are deemed worthy?

Do you actually think there are any tops on Broadway?
