Hi All-
I was offered $ 32.00 + (thru TDF ) for the revival play Old Acquaintance..and I searched the message board and it seems to me that no one reviewed this play.. I read Ben Brantley's review on NYTIMES- its kinda "so-so" but I saw the Audio Slide Show (NYTIMES) about the Stage design and I was so fascinated.. the love the whole 40's design -park avenue style... I am a very visual person and I love intricate stage design..
Is the play worth seeing -storywise , acting ? per playbill its 2 hour and 10 minutes with 2 intermission.. Any input about the play ... I would appreciate it ?
I was actually thinking between Old Acquaintance & Gone Missing (off-broadway play)
Thanks

I love Old Acquaintance. I thought the sets were incredible. While the plot is slightly tired and guessable Colin and Harris make it fresh. Harris chews every last once of that scenery which is ok. I fi=ound Diane Davis to be the highlight of the show. The sets and costumes are FABULOUS. I found it to be very enjoyable and just a lovely night at the theatre.

I saw the play and was bored silly by it. The plot goes nowhere and the two leading actresses both seem to be performing in different plays. Yes, the costumes are good and the sets lavish (but anachronistic), but that doesn't make for an engaging evening in the theater.

I aggree with BwayBaby. I saw this and thought it was very good. It's different than what's currently on Broadway now. I think its a delightful classic.
I agree wholeheartedly with Dolly. Skip it.
A huge bore. Skip it.

I saw the play on Sunday afternoon, and was very underwhelmed. The mostly geriatric audience that was in attendance gave the sets more applause than the production itself. The fact that the play was written and performed in 1940, and hasn't been revived since in almost 70 years, should belie any claims that it's a "classic". As for the two leads, Margaret Colin acts as if she's been tranquilized, and Harriet Harris is silly and hysterical (but not funny).

I agree with Dolly.
Complete waste of an afternoon. There's barely even a plot.

My guest at OLD ACQUAINTANCE was the star of a current show in NY. He was also underwhelmed. We couldn't understand why this flounder was revived.
I am afraid- I am going to see it this weekend- despite all the warnings from the posters, that I consider as my mentors... I am so "curious" about the sets and costumes. I do know that - that should not be the reason to see a play...
but the story itself and the acting.
I have watched the the Audio Image about the scenic design from NYTIMES -4 times now
I am prepared that I will be bored to death.. hey ! I have seen worst plays before..
Thanks for all your input-

Edit : I like Stephen Bogardus though and I seen him in "High Society" and that was a horrible experience to me (even though I love Cole Porter's music )
Yup- I just purchased my ticket

Be sure to let us know what you thought of it. I had a ticket for last weekend but had a scheduling problem at the last minute. The author of Old Acquaintances is the same person who wrote BELL BOOK and CANDLE.
Cyndi Lauper needs to do another Broadway show. Why not make this a musical and put Madonna opposite Cyndi Lauper.
That would be impossible.. though I would love to see madonna .
Speaking of her
Tomorrow is her birthday !!!! Aug 16...

Why do you say it would be impossible. Maybe because madonna is afraid to appear with Cyndi Lauper on stage because she knows she would look like a pale camparison. After all we all know Cyndi is the better of the 2 in all aspects of entertaining.
I mean.. impossible bec. of Madonna's schedule ... I think so ?
She has a new CD coming out this FALL ....and a tour ( I heard )

I loved this production especially Harriet Harris. She is hysterical in it. I found it very entertaining and actually bought tickets to see it a second time.
All because of Harris. The sets are breathtaking.
I wonder what they do with the furniture when the production ends? I would be interested in buying it.
