So got a few minutes here at JFK before I board my flight to make afew comments about my week in NY. I didn't do a thread as I went, but posted in various other threads.
I just saw WSS twice today - once at the Broadway Theater and then again on the E train. This WSS is so true to life, & without updating the book I felt like I was watching real life kids today - even with outdated slang. This is going to be huge. It has the sexiest cast on Broadway - there are people here who are going to be VERY big stars VERY quickly.
I ended up seeing Moulin Rouge twice this week, the second time from a very good seat just by sheer chance (that and a credit card). I would see it again. So much to love.
The best play I saw was Halfway Bitches Go to Heaven off-Broadway. Again an absolutely amazing cast. Heartbreaking reality. Difficult to watch. I had to turn away at one point. But, this is life as it is happening down the block.
Went to see Lion King for the first time ever. The Spanish kindergartner sitting next to me was enraptured. He exclaimed in fright "Scar!" everytime that character appeared.
I saw Hadestown. It reminded me a lot of Lion King. A very perfect production.
I liked Sing Street off-Broadway, but it isn't anywhere near the quality people expect when they see a Broadway show. It is nowhere near the quality of the above shows.
Perhaps they think that because something like To Kill a Mockingbird has a simple set that they can stay simple. But TKAM is a very good reimagining & retelling of a well known story. I enjoyed it.
Sandra Bernhard at Joe's Pub was fun. Best moment of my trip:
She had a joke about how she is over white women with foundations in Africa.
Front center I piped up " Even Madonna?"
She grinned. "Down you!" & made some joke about Madame X
