blaxx, you are the wind beneath my horns.
I can't wait for the ones where they CAN TELL YOU how hard the cast worked on the show, therefore you must be nice to everything related to it.
I actually enjoyed Munk's review, my point was more that if you want to show to succeed, then give some specific points on what they can do to make it work better - and if it was that heinously bad, so be it. Most people do work hard on projects, whether their heart is in it or if its just another paycheck. I'm not asking people to be "nice." If that was the case, was a boring world we would live in.

You make a very good point blaxx! I never thought of it that way...My reaction or intent was not to defend , but to let others know the show is pretty good and deserve to be given its preview time to work out the kinks. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I do not have any problem with someone hating the show. Its not for everyone.
I must add I am not a "shill" and like many others thought this would be an excercise in mediocrity. However I was very surprised at how good it actually was. I did not take a poll of the audience, but the reaction was however very enthusiastic and I heard no one say anything bad as we exited. That's not to say that they did not. Is it the greatest thing to come on Broadway? No but it is far from being placed among the worst. I will say it again.. Xanadu is highly entertaining and a fun night in the theater.
Like what I said on the other thread .... i love Xanadu - Its nice to know that there were some people who like the show, but please let us know as to why you like it ? and good points about the show...but again .. Thanks for posting,,Also I have observed that when we start a thread of reviews and it seems that the posting is negative - someone will start another thread that goes.. I love Xanadu... Deuce is good... Pirate Queen is awesome. can we stick on 1 thread and defend our opinions !
Any more of those 2nd night previewers reactions ?

Another good point... Perhaps there should be a thread called Xanadu Reviews. Then there would be a nice cross section of the good and bad.

Perhaps munk should rewrite his review to idea that there is actually some content as to why they didn't like it whereas he says it just sucked. See no one on here can take their own advice. munks review really wasnt that concise and as I said a bit premature.

Seriously?
This thing is god?
Aw crap. Does anyone have a good recepie for crow? Maybe with mushrooms?
Is there a show we ALL love?
I can't think of one.
So shall we aim for a little tolerance of others' tastes?
People like the show and people hate the show. So what? That's the reaction to every show. And for someone to say "the audience seemed to love it" is nothing more than a general observation and is quite an understandable tatement. It doesn't mean they are defending the show, it sounds like they just made an observation. I've seen the same type of reaction at flop shows I liked (Seussical and Big) and hit shows I hated (Notre Dame de Paris in London). And you most certainly can tell when the majority of an audience dislikes a show, so let's not pretend someone has to poll the entire audience to pick up the majority reaction or perception. That's just bitching for the sake of being bitchy and assuming that a person with a differing opinion who makes a rather simple and understandable observation must be a moron simply because you do not respect their opinion.
I'm going to see Xanadu. I'll probably like it. And that is perfectly ok. And anyone who thinks I'm stupid for enjoying it is an elitist narrow-minded schmuck.
Matt: I don't think you were talking about me, but as far as the "the audience seemed to love the show" argument, I don't think that statement holds any weight early in previews - particularly the first week or so. The house is LITTERED with friends and family. When I was there on Wednesday, I felt as if I were at some reunion and I was the only one that didn't know everyone else.
Don't get me wrong - i'm not saying they only seemed to enjoy the show because they had friends or family, but it's too early yet to gauge the audience reaction.
I do firmly believe that the reviews for this show will be awful, and that the show, as Dame said, deserves to close on opening night.
LOL of course if you go to the very first preview there's going to be tons of people related to the production in the audience. That's true of any show..
Your commentary that you can't gauge an audience response is valid for this reason... so time will tell, for sure.
I also think (not saying you specifically) - that many people RUSH to see a show so early who may not exactly have an open mind and just want to confirm and race onto the message boards how much they were right in predicting failure. Again, not saying YOU, Munk - but for some, it's a lot easier to race out, see the show and slam-post before others have had the opportunity to see it and offer a differing opinion. It's sort of a temporary elitist position to hold when you can say " well just wait until you see it for yourself and then you'll see I'm right".. This goes for a glowing review too, naturally....
Hey, don't get me wrong - I wanted to love it. The film is one of my greatest guily pleasures, and my XANADU soundtrack is nearly worn out. A HUGE guilty pleasure of mine.
AFTER SIX WEEKS *******************************

I LOVED reading this thread- This is probably my favorite THREAD of all time here...
I am going to bump this....
(note : I dont mean to imply anything by bumping this..I just "love" this thread, it makes me
everytime I read it..)
WOW ! Its been since 5-6 weeks ago ! I was so unsure then ..now I'm a fANADU !
*********
BTW- Mister Matt -I did not realize that was you ! (now that were both a fANADU)
I hope youre not insinuating that --that's me ( with wrong grammar- as you can tell I wasn't from here originally -that was the only remark ... that I felt really bad

I can't find the post where munk said something akin to "I am usually dead on with the critics, just wait untili the reviews come out."
Bummer.
With all due respect munk is entitled to his opinion (as we all are!) This show is just not going to be everyones' fav.
Actually believe it or not...
I have two favorite reviewers here- Yankeefan & Munk (yes! -its true)
I actually like both of their reviews... I always read it--its usually very well-thought out & intelligent

I understand not everyone likes the same thing, darlings. I just found it amusing he said that about the reviewers and now look, a majority of them liked it.
I actually like both of their reviews... I always read it--its usually very well-thought out & intelligent
Let me add two more things... I always LEARN something from their reviews.. I thought for the longest time that Yankeefan was really Riedel and Munk was Brantley

jaystarr - I was not referring to you at all. Just the numerous native speakers on BWW who grew up taking English classes and still don't know the difference between there, their, and they're.
By the way, looks like munk's prediction was wrong.
My problem is not with those who don't like something, but either post originally that they liked it better than they thought and then ramp it up to hating it, just so they can be clever, or noticed or cool, or whatever and the big one:
Insist on posting that they hate something on a "LOVE" thread, just so they can feel superior or righteous or just to stir the pot. IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMETHING, that's perfectly fine, just DON'T GO INTO A 'LOVE THREAD' with it.
If you need me, I will be in the Love thread.
Mister Matt- Okay- I just want to clear that ....were good now
and enjoy XANADU !
and.. munk is entitled to his opinion aside from he is one my favorite reviewer
and I admired him bec. he defends on what he believed.

I agree with you singing backup...
My hubby read this thread several times and he told me something that I just realize (If you read this from the beggining -youll get my insinuation !) There were "some " people who saw it in its 1st previews, posted something and changed their opinion after munk's review (at least munk sticked to his principles- I admire that !) unlike...............
ohhhh.. i dont wanna be b*tchy ! and yet they still attacked XANADU till now...

>_>
Thanks for bumping this thread, JStarr. It was fun to read through it again. I'm just sorry that there is yet another show on Broadway that nearly everyone, critics and audiences alike, seems to adore except me. The other shows in that category include Spring Awakening and Spelling Bee.
That being said, I am really looking forward to seeing Wicked for the 14th time tomorrow evening. I'll see you all at the closing performance of Xanadu...in 10 years.
