"But here they are, who I would nominate, if I were given the opportunity to create the nominations."
So these are YOUR nominations, NOT your *predictions*, right?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
--Aristotle
I don't think there's a way that Angela Lansbury won't get a nod for BLITHE SPIRIT. Very interesting Best Leading Actress in a Musical list and I think it's really plausible.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Yes, these are my picks for the Tony Nominations. Not predictions.
My rationale for Best Musical - "Billy Elliot" is a lock, coming off rave reviews both here and abroad. "next to normal" is the "little show that could" of the year and made a remarkable turnaround in the 11 months it was being reworked. "Rock of Ages" is a genuine surprise - fun, enjoyable and doesn't set out to be what it isn't. The last slot was between "Shrek" and "9-to-5," with the former having the upper-hand because of better reviews.
Whoever noticed I left out sound design - that's correct. And choreography. Just slipped my mind.
Here are my choices:
Choreography - Billy Elliot, Guys and Dolls, Rock of Ages, White Christmas
Sound/Musical - Billy Elliot, next to normal, Rock of Ages, Shrek
Sound/Play - Blithe Spirit, Exit the King, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Norman Conquests
"Picture "The View," with the wisecracking, sympathetic sweethearts of that ABC television show replaced by a panel of embittered, suffering or enraged Arab women" -the Times review of Black Eyed
I didn't particularly enjoy [title of show]. Still, if the nominators want to be vindictive and leave out one of the bigger musicals, it could sneak in for everything: musical, book, score...
I feel that Stephen Daldry's directing in BILLY ELLIOT is some of the most detailed, magical and genious work Broadway has seen in years. No nomination for him would be simply criminal.
"There's nothing good on. The media hates Christmas. The media loves vampires, though. Maybe they will show a Twilight Christmas." -Danmeg's 10 year old son.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
