Ugh! I know! I find myself perusing Virgin every week looking for somehting new. Last week it was Summer of '42, we'll see what I snatch up this week... I've been thinking about Merrilly... (but Sondheim shows I don't know and haven't seen always intimidate me)

That's me too! I bought Pirate Queen and High Fidelity and thought, why am I buying these? I'm never going to listen to them.

Ah well, never can have too many coasters.

I think it's worse when you already have a cast album, and then buy the remaster.

Not like I didn't do that when the Sondheim ones were re-released.

I've also bought an album on iTunes, and then had to have the actual album...

I ALWAYS have to have the actual album. Even though I'm running out of storage space. And I have this thing about actually buying them in stores. I didn't buy Summer of '42 online. I waited until I saw it in a store and snatched it up.

I can't even tell you how many times I've bought something on iTunes and bought the actual CD version as well.

I have an addiction too. I've become such a completist and I want everything.

When you have more cast recordings than actual albums. My friends get in my car and they're like "what are you listening to?" and then I turn it on and they're like "oh, figures."

When there's nothing wrong with having four different recordings of Les Miserables on your iPod.

Or four different recordings of Little Shop.

No, they are not all exactly the same.

when apart from 10 operas and a holiday CD (of Broadway stars singing Christmas songs), they're the only freakin' thing on your freakin' iPod.

Last month, I decided it was time to clean out the collections in general, so I surprised a director friend of mine with close to 250 cast album CDs (as well as five boxes of various theatre books). I kept my favourites, of course: the Papermill FOLLIES, the original COMPANY, perhaps a dozen more of various shows... but I gotta tell you -- I feel so cleansed.....

My ratio of "regular" albums to cast recordings on my ipod is something like 20:1 (though I have over 65 gigs worth of stuff on there). I've spent ludicrous amounts of time (looking for cheap cds) and money to get stuff.

I'm at the point now where I have a special playlist of anything on my ipod that's NOT a musical that I can put on whenever I have someone in the car who doesn't like musicals (thankfully Caitie is just as addicted as I am, so she doesn't mind)

I too have an mp3 player and you should see the amount of space that the musical theatre section of it alone inhabits. It only holds 1 gig overall, and because of all of the showtunes I have on there, the other sections of it (opera, classic rock, and miscellaneous) can basically only have 20 songs at least.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

how about when you realize the money you have spent(or wasted in the case of itunes and then buying the physical cd, why not just get the cd to begin with?) could be a down payment on a house had you put it in a savings account or something that would have made you money instead of having another version of Sweeney Todd or Merrilly or whatever

...when you play jekyll & hyde so much in your car that your friends are able to sing along, word for word. and they are familiar with the foreign language casts.

...you plan your schedule around cast album release dates.

...you are late to work because you couldnt decide on a show to listen to in the car.

When your uncle gives you a $75 gift certificate to amazon.com at 2:00pm and by 4:00pm you already have 7 cast recordings ordered and ready to ship...

When your friends get in your car, hear whats on, and say "I'm going to burn you copies of some REAL music."

The worst is when technology passes you by . . . you have to buy something you already own. I have some shows on vinyl, cassette AND CD. I'm glad I never got caught up in the 8-track craze! I did once have an RCA Selectavision Video Disk Player, though, and inherited a Sony Betamax player.

I am needing to replace stuff on vinyl. Luckily I can burn vinyl and cassette to cd at home. But I have some burned copies of cast recordings that I am thinking of replacing just so I have the booklets/liner notes. I am trying to convince myself that all I need is the music!!

re: You Know You Have a Cast Album Addiction When...

When you buy a cast recording, not knowing anything about, on the sole basis that it's cheap. Some of my favorite cast recordings are results of this.

My brother said to me the other day, after coming home with a few new CRs:

"Rivi, why don't you buy important things like clothes?"

It's true, all of my money goes into new music.
One time, Patti LuPone punched me in the face...

re: You Know You Have a Cast Album Addiction When...

When you have so many recordings of one show that you take the best songs from each cast recording and make one "ultimate" recording of the show...

Is anyone else here so anal retentive that when a cast recording imports w/ "original broadway cast" or "various artists" under the artists column on itunes that they have to go scour the internet and find which actor sings what song? It drives me nuts not knowing who's singing...
