I love Sondheim and William Finn and Jason Robert Brown. But Rodgers and Hammerstein do great work too. Love love Comden and Green musicals (with the exception of Wonderful Town) and there is Gershwin because he created Porgy and Bess and that is simply a masterpiece!
And of course Adam Guettel. That music is sooooo beautiful.

Posted: 12/29/06 at 5:45pmThat's a tough question because I think every composers has had hits and misses. I'd have to say Sondheim - soley based on Sunday in the Park with George, I'm not a HUGE sondheim fan like most people. And Maury Yeston because i think he writes some gorgeous melodies. And LaChiusa for taking some obscure subjects and making them into rather fine musicals. Not JRB fan at all, I just can't get into his music. And I wouldn't consider Guettel my favorite yet because he's only had one major staging of his work.

Posted: 12/29/06 at 6:04pmSondheim and Gershwin are definitely my top two. I'm sure I could come up with a top five (or ten) list, but it would be nothing but 2 and 3-way ties the whole way down!
