Don't get too excited yet. There are plenty of things that could disrupt this over the next 300+ days.

Opportunities to see her powerful, intense and fiery genius are rare and infrequent, so I consider myself quite fortunate to have seen her three times -- as Mary in Long Day's Journey into Night (opposite Robards, Michael Moriarty and Kevin Conway), as Medea (opposite Dame Judith Anderson -- absolutely brilliant) and as Maria Callas in Master Class. I hope this happens. Seeing her opposite the also formidable Miss Seldes would be a quite a theatrical event.

One of the truly great artists of the theatre. I worked at the Mark Taper Forum during her eight weeks doing MASTER CLASS. I saw her at least a dozen times. Each performance was astonishing on every conceivable level. She is the standard against actors should measure themselves.
On the recent AMERICAN MASTERS profile on Eugene O'Neill she does a brief, but extraordinary and probing reading from LONG DAY'S JOURNEY... There aren't enough words to describe the depth of her skill as an actor.

Also, completely humble: When Zoe came backstage the first time she saw Doubt, someone told her that they would love to see her do the show. She very sincerely declared that she couldn't possibly tackle that role (I'm paraphrasing). And, of course, she COULD and would be divine in that part.
Ironically, Cherry said the same thing when told that she would make an excellent Martha in WAOVW? one day. And, I think Cherry would be a very surprisingly brilliant Martha.
And Marian Seldes is ALWAYS divine and giving and loving. She really celebrates the theatre--she was so moved by Doubt that she literally hugged everyone of us backstage as she left the stage door.
Such great ladies!
Put all 3 of those ladies in a show together, and I would PAY to work backstage!

Posted: 4/25/06 at 6:39pmZoe Caldwell is worth a trip to New York City for me (and I live 2 1/2 hours north of Toronto). I saw her in Master Class and met her afterwards. I commented on her time spent in Stratford, Ontario and mentioned I had saved articles about that. When I returned home, I mailed these to her; shortly afterwards I received a very kind letter from Ms. Caldwell thanking me. What a gracious lady!
