a really stupid RENT question

why are some songs a and b ( does this just signify that the songs continues later in the show?) and is that why "I'll cover you" is a reprise??

I think so..not technically sure though lol.
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

A reprise is a song sung by different people. Like I'll Cover You is sung by Angel and Collins in the Reprise its Collins and the background singers. The A's and B's are pretty much continuations but they arent considered reprises because its the same people singing in them. That's what I heard so I may be incorrect some one please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that the difference is that in the case of A and B songs, they are divided by other action onstage. La Vie Boheme A and B are broken by an aside between Mimi and Roger. Happy New Year A and B are broken by a voice mail, etc

"A reprise is a song sung by different people."

that's not exactly true. for example annie oakley sings the first version of you can't get a man with a gun, and then she reprises it in the act 1 finale.
"I'm an American, Damnit!!! And if it's three things I don't believe in, it's quitting and math."

I believe the A and B signify that there is only a short break between the songs. Yet a reprise generally happens later in the show.. Many times in a different act.. And of course there is always the chance that Larson was just screwing with us..
"All work and no smut makes Cammy lose her edge." ~DG

"Someday I'm going to have a baby and I'm gonna name her L'il Mimi Marquez and I and will sing to her every day and when she's a toddler I will say "L'il Mimi Marquez, clad only in a bubble diaper, will perform her famous play pen handcuff dance to the sounds of breast milk being pumped!" ~Kringas

A reprise does not have to be sung by a different person. It's simply a repetition of an earlier verse or song. The A and B designations are there to indicate that there is a break, either by action or another song, between the two parts. :)

Sorry for my wrong information. That's what I was told and it seems to be wrong now. Now I know thanks. Sorry again.

re: a really stupid RENT question

Yeah, it's the whole continuation thing. If you look at the way the songs are billed in the Playbill, it says "La Vie Boheme/I Should Tell You," "Happy New Year/Voice Mail #3," and "Your Eyes/Finale." And they don't bill "Seasons of Love B." It's just that the songs are broken up by smaller things in the middle, that's all. The reprise of "I'll Cover You" is a stand-alone number by itself, so it's not an "A" or a "B."
