What do you guys think abut her voice? I just can't aquire a taste for it. Although, IMO, she more than makes up for it in acting.

Can, can I have it?

I adore her singing voice. Best sung Mama Rose outside of Merman, in my opinion.

She may not have a great voice on paper, but try to imagine any other voice singing "Worst Pies In London," "It's Today," "Beauty and the Beast," "Bobbing Along..."

It's a voice rich with character and feeling, in place of round vowels and a two-octave range.

If you want to check out Angela in her prime..........go to Youtube.com and do a search for her. On the first page, there's a clip of her singing "Thoroughly Modern Millie" at the Academy Awards the year the film came out. The clip isn't in the greatest condition.

She is unbelievable!!! So stylish.....so sexy........at the peak of her talent! In her official authorized bio, she says that one of the reasons she sang at the Oscars that year was to show the world, and the studio heads sitting in the audience, that she was fully and completely capable of doing the film version of "Mame."

Check it out.

I love her voice! Especially on the Original Broadway Cast Album of MAME. Every song she delivers is a gem. She's no Beverly Sills but it has an endearing quality and above all character and personality and I'll take that any day over these new so-called Broadway "belters".

She's one of the few women in the world that everyone seems to love.

And the only thing my parents and I agree on.

She is and will remain one of the best international actresses ever. She's got a strong personnality when she sings. She's one of the last successful actresses who can sing and dance ("often as the same time!") and act.

Sarah bernhardt to a fellow actress: "Have you got stage fright, dear?" "No," the young lady aswered astonished. "Don't worry, it will come along with talent!"

I agree with pants2, actually. Well, as far as Sweeney goes. I was introduced first to the LuPone version, and I fell in love. I recently received the OBCR from a friend and, i've gotta tell you, I prefer Ms. Patti.

But i've never heard her in anything else but "Beauty and the Beast", the movie, and for sure, she's the classic singer of the title track.

As for Sweeney, meh.

Even her laughably bad southern accent in PRETTYBELLE didn't matter - her singing won me over.

Yeah her voice isn't the most "polished", but it is very theatrical, very warm and personable and (too me at least) has the ability to tell a great story.

Alot of singers I find these days cannot tell a story when they sing, Mrs. Lansbury always could (and a good ripper of a humdinger at that!)

The only reason I have the B&TB soundtrack is I want her complete collection of recordings.

Okay I totally admit I am a big Angela freak (duh).

There was talk a number of years ago that she was going into the studio to record an album, I wish that she would have done it. I love her voice. I got a demo of the score to Kander and Ebb's "The Visit" with her singing "Love and Love Alone". Fabulous.

I think she possesses a near flawless voice. So rich!

She's an actress first though, so her singing voice is always filtered through her acting process.
Sweeney is perfection. It was (basically) written for her - and though it may not the most gorgeous sound - it was a vocal choice that gives the character a specificity needed.

My favorite recording of her is "Me and My Town" on the OBC of Anyone Can Whistle.

She's my FAVORITE Rose.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

She did the dubbed voice for Ingrid Thulin in "The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" . Thulins heavy accent necessitated it

I was fortunate enough to see her in "Mame" three times. She was the epitome of style and glamour. Truly unbelievable whether simply crossing the stage with her head held back and a cigaretter holder in her hand or dancing up a storm kicking her leg to her head which she did more than once. She was at the height of her attractiveness and totally in touch with her sexuality. When she performed "If He walked Into My Life" she owned the moment. Her voice was both strong and intense and her vocal power at the close had the audience adoringly cheering. The quality of her voice for me was never an issue. Like Chita, Barbara Harris and Gwen, the pipes were only part of a gifted package that when witnessed on stage was mesmerizing to behold. Curiously though as much as I loved these women when they were singing, I never really longed for a solo vocalist album of standards from any of them.

have to agree with dark_angel on this. haven't yet seen chenowith master lansbury's ability to turn a phrase, not for the sake of adding to what we notice of her voice, but what we notice about the character she's playing.
