Posted: 11/17/10 at 10:19pmI'm really praying that it gets recorded. Unlike many people who saw the show, I actually LOVED the score. It just made me ridiculously happy and giddy. This is something that I would buy for 30 bucks on impulse at the theater. No questions asked.

Posted: 11/17/10 at 11:02pmI'm seeing the show tomorrow night. From the clips I have seen it does sound like a lively, traditional musical comedy score. If they hope for future productions a cast album would be essential.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Saw the show tonight. It will play well to family audiences but the script is about on a par with those animated TV specials. The score is fun, reminiscent of 60's Broadway or 60's TV Christmas specials.
As for a CD, if one hasn't already been done I can't see them making one now. By the time it came out the production will have closed and there would be no market for a Christmas-themed cast album in mid February.

Posted: 11/18/10 at 11:50pmI asked the woman selling merchandise if there would be a cd tonight. She replied there would not be a recording "this season," I don't know if that means theyre already planning on it for next season.

Well, I'm sure that's the hope. I mean, can these shows really recoup in NINE weeks? Seems pretty impossible to me.
And being a lapse Jew....I can do without the cheesey xmas show that runs for two years at a pop. I haven't seen a one of them, and have no plans to. (We did have tix for the Grinch, but lost out due to the strike a few years ago. i would still like to see that as its my favorite holiday story. )

I was wondering about that too. Even if you get a full sellout for every show it doesn't seem possible.

"How do the Producers manage those economics, you ask?
Well, as Variety reported from behind its pay-walled tower, they don't.
First up, because they're movie people, they don't talk money because they don't have to. On "Elf," there aren't another two dozen producers they need answer to. But a reliable estimate is that "Elf" has been mounted as a pretty average Broadway musical with $500,000-to-$600,000 in weekly running costs for its 15 musicians and 22-member cast, and capitalization that is only slightly under the typical $10 million-$12 million mark. In other words, "Elf" would be extremely fortunate to recoup in nine months of sold-out perfs, much less nine weeks.
Well, just because they are movie people, doesn't mean they're not smart. Variety continues . . .
Obviously, the makers of "Elf" have their eye on the future. The big plan: "to extend the brand of the film," says Michael Lynne, principal of Unique Features (and former New Line founder, with Bob Shaye)."
