I think I am going to order it right now.
I am not familiar with the music (at all), but does Kathy Voytko sing a solo at all? She was wonderful as Eva!

Do they really have no cover, or was mine a mistake? I got the cardboard sleeve and booklet, but the front of the jewel box was just an ad for their label.

Over on ATC they are complaining about the libretto and the cardboard sleeve making the jewel case an odd size to store on your shelf. Sheesh! Get a life.
If you have the original Frogs recording or Sweeney Todd, or Evita or any one of a bunch of OTHER OCRs you know that this size is not all that unusual.
Also, if you want it to fit on your shelf, just take the cardboard sleeve and the libretto off and put the jewel case on the shelf. Problem solved.
Seems to me that you'd be talking instead about the CD itself.
I have it and I love it. I really wish it had been released before it was off the stage because I do love hearing the music on CD and getting to know the lyrics which are always easier to hear on the CD...and then going to see the show. But Sondheim, being Sondheim, you get something different every time you listen...so I look forward to many more listenings :)
Also, like the fact that this version is grittier and not as glossy and studio sounding. It has a more up close and person sound to it and the choral numbers are much easier to understand than the original recordings.
I Love to Travel
Dress Big
Hades
some of my favorites...but they are all great.
Sorry, but the one thing I DON'T like that they changed in this version is the staging and bits that Stroman did during the Hymn to Dionysos. And I didn't like it on the stage either. But it is particularly grating when you have to listen to it on the CD.
It is true that this piece needed to be broken up a bit to interrupt the otherwise very long staging of the song and dance but having Lane and Bart running around and Lane acting drunk didn't do it for me. I love the music in the song and wish Stroman could have found another way to break this up without doing it this way. It is annoying at best.
Oh well...small price to pay for the rest of the music.
And Ariadne sounds WONDERFUL.
BTW, I can't imagine this OCR being made with Kattan.
Listening to the rapport between Bart and Lane and the give and take of the dialogue and hearing 'I Love to Travel', it's hard to imagine how tortuous it would be if Kattan had stayed in the show.
Another special shout out to Roger Bart for making this show even better.

Jessica, you CAN cancel pre orders on Amazon. Just to go your account and look up the order and follow the links and instructions.
If I remember correctly from ordering and canceling in the past, you'll get an email to confirm your cancellation, so you'll know that you won't get two CDs

the cover is the PS classics thing -- very bizarre.
As for Voytko singing a solo - she doesn't really -- just a snip as Dionysos is leaving Hades and she calls out to him with a reprise of the Dio refrain...sadly...that's it.

Odd shape? I'm confused. Is it like the Assassins CD, also from PSClassics? If so, thats fine.
And that's too bad about Kathy, I found her to have a very nice voice, altho the transition from her lower register to her upper is a little on the weak side.

SamIAm, I'm perfectly happy with the size. In fact, I like the cardboard sleeve/booklet arrangement quite a bit - I have it on Assassins and think it's a much better way to include the booklet than using a bigger jewel box. I was just surprised (and curious) about the cover.
I do have a life, and will write about the CD once I've had time to listen to it more.

I saw the complaining on ATC. Big deal. Is that their worst problem with their life? I load my CDs on my iTunes and then my iPod. After I read the info, the CD goes on the shelf.
I just want my copy! Maybe today. *Watching the mailbox* Can't wait!

I hate not being online for a good week...especially the week PS Classics sends out The Frogs!!
PS Classics = God. First Assassins two weeks early, now The Frogs?
I got mine on Tuesday. I listened to it beginning to end as soon as I stopped screeching and running around my house like a maniac unwrapped it...but since then, I've only been listening to a few songs....
And if you know me, you probably know why (coughcough Roger Bart cough cough)
...I LOOOOVE HIM. *done*

I'm going to D.C. on Sunday and if there were a just G*d, the FROGS CD will be in my mailbox tomorrow morning.
If it is NOT there. I have abandoned my hope and my faith.

Posted: 1/15/05 at 2:11amQuick question. I listened to a song from it called "Hymnos: Evoe" on a Sondheim album. But, I checked the song listing for the CD and it's not there. Is that song still in the show? There's a song entitled "Hymn to Dionysus" and I thought maybe it was the same song with a different title. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Posted: 1/15/05 at 2:36amit's confusing. like, "Traveling Music" on the first CD is on the new one. it's just not listed. it's smushed together with dialogue at the begging of the "I Love to Travel" track. the first CD is more seperated and the new one has pretty much everything from the first one it's just more fleshed out and integrated. plus it has all the new songs that complete the score which is great. a lot of the dialoge from the first one is still on this one, it's just interjected into the songs instead of standing alone. but some of the jokes are different, becasuse of Nathan's adaptation... hope that helps. and "Hymnos: Evoe" is incorperated into "Hymn to Dionysus", yes... Regarding the changes of title of some of the songs: Originally, the song titles had prefixes which corresponded to various parts of Greek drama, for example: Prologus, Parados, Parabasis, Exodus, etc. Since this concept was more or less abandoned for the Lincoln Center production, these prefixes were eliminated, which has apparently caused some confusion for those who are familiar with the original show titles.
A question...Is the new Frogs CD a 2 cd set? Is it the complete show?

I listen to both CDs and like the first as well, but you have to look at the new OCR as a totally different show because that's what it is. Even where Sondheim left music in, he did quite a few changes in the lyrics and the general flow of the music.
Listen to the Frogs on the original studio recording and you'll hear a very different kind of song, though they started out the same.
I wouldn't suggest comparing them because they weren't meant to be the same show. The book AND the score were revamped and added to and all of that means it's a new show, so the names of many of the songs were changed too.
Sondheim wanted to do something very different with it if he was going to do it. If you can get your hands on the GREEN BOOK from Lincoln Center with the articles by lane et al, you'll get a better flavor for how they put this together.

I felt the need to bump this thread back up as my CD came yesterday.
I was literally jumping up and down with excitement when I opened my mailbox (to which my roommates just walked away...).
I've already listened to it in entirety three times and have listened to "I Love to Travel" and "Ariadne" more times than I can count. I forgot how much I loved these songs. And any chance to hear Nathan and Roger sing... :sigh:
My new favorite quote?
"I have hopes, dreams - I wanna see Paris. I wanna have a menage a trois. Is that pastry?"
I am so glad I got my CD through PS Classics instead - thank you to everyone who suggested I cancel with Amazon (I'd still be waiting!)
