just for fun's sake, after reading the book, was thinking how strange the musical would have turned out if somethings that happened in the book happened on stage....
1, Nessarose not having arms, just picture Michelle F sauntering around the stage with her hands tied behind her.
2, Elfaba bashing in Morible's head with a trophy, kinda gross.
3, Fyero in makeup? this would have been kinda cool, but would only work well if you cast dark skined actors and painted on the blue specks. Y should Elfaba be the only one in paint, share the fun.
4, Have Dancing Through Life take pasce at the Philosophy Club rather than the OZ Dust Ballroom. Wouldnt that be "Wicked"
(If you've read the book you would know what that means)
If anyone can think of any other strange things that happened in the book that would have been a laugh on stage (like the dotish and comical Nanny at the end) let me know
and remember, ITS ALL FUN, some people in here take things WAY too seriously

If Fiyero was like he was in the book, he would be too shy for Dancing Through Life...
But i do think the philosiphy club would be an...intersting addition
...Whenever I see the play I just always find myself thinking their should be some interspecies love

Posted: 5/10/05 at 4:18pmIf I remember correctly, didn't they try painting the diamonds on Norbert during the SF run? I remember reading it in an article somewhere. They decided not to because people who weren't right in the first few rows couldn't figure out what it was, and it just made him look dirty. Am I hallucinating?

I remember reading Fiyero had blue diamonds but they looked like giant bruises. No you aren't hallucinating.
My addition: When they go to the bar place with the tiger and they see all the little elves and stuff (sorry for bad detail its been a while)
Also just having it about the childhood and having a bigger part for Fiyero.

Posted: 5/10/05 at 4:38pmI'm actually rereading the book right now, and it's interesting to mark the differences between the two. They had no choice but to change many of the story lines to make it family-friendly. They also had to cut so many things to bring the show to time. It's already a long show - imagine how long it would be with all of Elphaba's childhood, plus the in-between years in the Emerald City and the years at Kiamo Ko.

Those sisters-in law could have added a nice layer of good old fashioned dark comedy to the whole thing!
I had read the book long before seeing the musical, and I remember thinking - gee that philosophy club scene is going to be interesting!
I was also hoping Elphie's cat, "Malky" would have been included. I liked that she had a pet.
And Turtle Heart - he was pretty central to the book. I was surprised he didn't show up in the musical. But I guess since the musical didn't focus on her childhood, then it would have been confusing.
And if the musical DID focus on her childhood, can you imagine this little green rugrat running around the stae biting people's fingers off?
Darn - forgot just how dark the book was!

Fiyero is the mix of Fiyero, the name and the character traits of Avaric, Boq's roomate.
Remember Boq being in love with Elphaba? That would have been so cool!
#13re: being silly with WICKED
Posted: 5/10/05 at 7:07pmI think having a different, darker number in place of "Dancing Trough Life" would have been a better choice. And having the blue-diamond Fiyero could have been cool. One line I love in the book is "They moved together, blue diamonds on a green field."

Yeah...they didn't use the blue diamonds cuz from after like the 10th row it looked like Norbert had welts down his body..:)
I love that line too! blue diamonds on a green field...GORGEOUS! i need to reread that book! I'm reading Mirror Mirror by Greg Maguire though..so ONE at a time!

Posted: 5/10/05 at 7:14pmwould have been interesting to see grommotik (or however you spell it) going around and slashing a poor unsuspecting goat's throat. Might not have appealed to the kiddies too much, however.

perhaps the word SPOILER should have been used for those who have NOT read the book........

I read someplace that Maguire is writing a sequel to Wicked - did you all see that?
Sorry, Elphaba - your correct!
#18re: being silly with WICKED
Posted: 5/10/05 at 11:50pmIt's not really a sequel. More like...a companion book. It's called Son of a Witch (haha, get your laughs out) and it mainly revolves around Liir.

Reading the book, the Philosphy Club part confused the hell out of me. I read the chapter twice, and was still confused out of my mind.
Another thing that confused me was Liir. The journey part was really boring to me, I kind of read it blindly, not paying the most attention to it. Suddenly, she had a kid. I've yet to re-read the section on the journey, so I still have no clue where it came from.
But I didn't like Liir too much. I'm somewhat disappointed the new book is about him, and not G(a)lina. You just know there is more to her...

I know what you mean, Tim. I had to reread some sections several times before I caught on to what was happening. ESPECIALLY the Philsophy Club. And I'm not too keen on picking up on deep hidden messages and such, so I just read it for the plot.
No, that was a lie, but I'm still not a very sensitive reader and I'm sure the book has much more to offer than what I got from it.

Posted: 5/10/05 at 11:59pmWhen she left the convent, anyway i think it was a convent, the nuns sent a boy with her that she apparently had when she was first there unconcious or unaware of her surroundings or something, they never told her it was her son, and she spent along time being dense about the matter or in denial
#23re: being silly with WICKED
Posted: 5/11/05 at 12:03amWhy did he decide to write a book about Liir? I just found him annoying, not entralling. I'd rather hear about Galinda coping with Elphaba's death.

Damn. I wish I had my own copy to re-read, but it ended up being the case of lending it to somebody only never to see it returned (and to make matter's worse it was the Bishop's wife (abeitly not my Bishop)! I thought of all people she would've returned it!
For the most part I could live with the stage adaption and what they changed.
However, some part of me wishes Elphaba did clobber Morrible over the head with the trophy in the book.
