heyy everyone. of course, we have all heard of brooklyn, the musical. i have the cd, and i think its AMAZING. but i was looking at a post about possible 2005 tony nomiations and i was surprised to see that a lot of people said that brooklyn wouldnt get nominated, let alone win. now, i havent seen it so maybe it isnt as good as im imagining..but i was just wondering- am i missing something?

the story is pretty awful, which i think lends alot to why it wont be nominated. some of the performances, especially by eden and ramona keller, are really great...but they don't require any acting, just belting really loud, which is probably why they wont be nominated.
as for costumes though, i think they definitely have a shot. those were the coolest part of the show b/c everything is made out of trash.
If nothing else good opens up, it may end up getting a nomination simply because it's open. You know?

Brooklyn stands NO shot at getting nominated for Best Musical, even though I really liked it.
Ramona Keller has the best shot at a nomination. The book and score have no shot either.
If I had to predict, it will get three nominations: Costumes, Ramona Keller, and Cleavant Derricks (which is even a big maybe, he did get great reviews though. )

According to the article below, it might not last that long:

Forget the Tonys.
I'm more amazed that there is only one current BKLYN thread on this site!
Good things come to those who wait.
ouch that article was rough! and it also insulted idina!
I am not saying this because I don't like the show.
I am saying this because it is realistic.
Brooklyn has little to no chance of getting any Tony nominations, besides possible nods for design aspects such as Costumes, Sets and Lighting. And even that is stretching it.
it doesn't insult Idina... it unfortunetely insults Eden... by saying that Idina's understudy (aka Eden) was skreechy, or whatever... it has nothing to do with Idina
ohh ok. that's still rough, but at least it's not about idina. lol

i still dont understand why it wont get best musical nomination. i have heard that there holes in the plot and that the story is weak in some spots, but in only a few. i think the score is amazing and eden and ramona definitly deserve to be recognized for their talent. am i wrong?
rent1988: In all honesty, yes.
Based on buzz, Dirty Rotten Scoudrels, Spamalot and Light in the Piazza should all get nods.
Then there are all those that I wouldn't say are shoo-ins but in all liklihood have a much, much, much better chance at getting a nod than Brooklyn, such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and, even though I'm not a fan of the show, Little Women.
And then if The 25th Annual Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is as amazing as has been said, and it moves to B'way in time (if at all), it should surely be a top contender.
Brooklyn really doesn't stand a chance, in any way. And frankly doesn't even remotely deserve to.
And even though I hate the whole juke-box genre, I would be willing to bet Good Vibrations and All Shook Up would get a nod before Brooklyn would.

Brooklyn received some of the worst reviews of any musical in many seasons and the opinions of the Tony nominating commitee generally fall in line with the critical consensus (reviewers really HATED the show, though a few mentioned Ramona Keller and the costumes favorably). Also remember that while most of the fan base for the show consists of people in their their teens and 20s, the nominating committee is made of people in their 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s -- you can imagine how popular the show will be with them.
There are only four slots for best musical. Early word seems to indicate that Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and probably Light in the Piazza are locks for nominations. The last slot will probably go to either Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Little Women, depending on the reviews. Good Vibrations has no chance for a nod and barring miraculous reviews, neither does All Shook Up. There simply is no room for Brooklyn (or Dracula for that matter) though there's an outside chance that Keller might be remembered (the costumes are an outside shot -- they would be vying for a slot against not only all those shows just mentioned, but also all of the revivals such as La Cage and Sweet Charity for one of four slots).
I have a sneak preview of the new William Finn Musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" which opens up in Feb. It may have a good chance. It's extremely funny, William Finn is amazing, and of course as always, the cast can sing the **** out of his music. Everybody should go see it.

Yes, the buzz for Spelling Bee is very strong (I'm going next week), but remember it's playing off-Broadway at Second Stage, and thus is not eligible for the Tony. If it gets a strong slate of reviews (especially if it gets a rave from Brantley), then there will be talk of moving it to Broadway. Whether that happens this season (there would be a question as to whether a suitable theatre would be available for it before the Tony deadline) or next (thus avoiding the looming Spamalot juggernaut at this year's Tonys), we'll have to wait and see.
Never mind the fact that "Wicked" has an advance of $30 million and "Brooklyn" about 30 cents.)
heh, sorry, that made me laugh
I love it how people write their opinions as if they're gospel and fact. I'm all for people having differing opinions, but the way some people write on this board...it's like their word is the end all and be all...blah! I hope, if anything, the actors get a nom for "Brooklyn."

Call it that if you like. I call it being realistic.
If you truly believe Brooklyn is going to get nominated, then good for you.
But don't get your hopes up. Ain't gonna happen.

The "singers" in brooklyn will NOT be getting ACTING nominations.
(or should the word "singers" be replaced with "screatchers")
but to be fair, the CD sounds really good
but I just don't like the story plot

I'll bet you $100 million Brooklyn will not receive a best musical nod. With the likes of Spamalot, DRS, Piazza, Little Women and Chitty (though the latter two will get mixed notices) opening in the next few months, Brooklyn will be VERY lucky to get even two nominations in the minor categories.
But, you don't have to take my word for it -- wait till May and you'll see.

I have trouble getting through the CD without laughing my ass off. I had to pull over on the side of the road during Eden's 5 year old scene for fear I would laugh myself into a car accident.
