What is the normal size of a heel of character shoes? Is it 1.5" or 2"? Or does it just vary?

It depends on

A) what you need them for
B) what you are comfortable with
C) the size of your foot.

It varies. But 2" is very common in a basic chracter shoe.

Q's right, it depends on your needs/size - you can get them higher than 2" and lower as well.

So say I'm going to buy a pair of characters shoes for generic auditions and/or shows that I'm not going to buy a new pair for every time. Which height would I get?

It's not which height is right to get...it's which height is right for YOU.

Unless something is specified, it's up to you.
Depends on your height and your size foot and what you are comfortable in.

if you're a dancer in nyc, you better have nothing less than a 2" heel. no one will take you seriously if you show up at an audition with a 1.5" character shoe on. make the investment. go to capezio or laduca and get a good shoe.

I'm with nycdncr on this. Character shoes should be 2.5" and if you're really good in heels, go for 3". No one looks good in 1.5" heels, and 2" is not great, either.

I'm not really a dancer but I wear them for more 'character' things. I had to dance a little in Alice in Wonderland but not the kind of dance you guys are talking about.

Mine are 2 inch heals and they are fine for me. It took me a while to get used to but now I'm fine with them. However, I don't think I could have gotten them any higher; I would have liked to because I'm short (5'1) but I don't think it would have worked out. My foot is also small- (5.5-6)

I auditioned for a regional production of Chicago, and the character shoes that these women had were quite high...and they have them in styles that look like "real" stylish shoes. Go for tall. LaDuca has great tall and stylish shoes.

Get a LaDuca 2.5 inch heal. Only consider a 3 inch if you are really a professional dancer. Too many girls get the 3 inch and wind up with an injured leg. "Work your way up." And please note that everyone's advising you to get a LaDuca. It's not an option.
