"A second flood, a simple famine,
Plagues of locusts everywhere,
Or a cataclysmic earthquake
I'd accept with some despair
But no, you've sent us Congress -
Good God, sir, was that fair?"

re: clever lyrics

Cole Porter is as clever as they come...

Times have changed,
And we've often rewound the clock
Since the Puritans got a shock,
When they landed on Plymouth Rock.
If today,
Any shock they should try to stem,
'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock,
Plymouth Rock would land on them!

In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
But now God knows,
Anything goes!
Good authors too who once knew better words
Now only use four-letter words
Writing prose,
Anything goes!
If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old limbs you like,
If Mae West you like,
Or me undressed you like,
Why nobody will oppose.
When every night the set that's smart is
Intruding in nudist parties in studios,
Anything goes!

re: clever lyrics

I agree Porter really has it going on in most of Anything Goes, but Sondheim definitely gets the prize. Another of his great shows for clever lyrics is Pacific Overtures - especially "Please Hello" where he uses accents and foreign languages to his advantage. Long live the king!
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

I agree. Cole Porter wrote great lyrics. I still think Sondheim is the most cleaver

re: clever lyrics

Sondheim is the BEST! One of my favorites is: "I could understand a person, if he wasn' good in bed. Doo-doo, doo-doo, doo! I could understand a person if he actually was dead! Doo-doo, doo-doo. Exclusive you! Elusive you! Will any person ever get the juice of you?" Elusive, exclusive, juice of. How can yo ugo wrong with that? Cole Porter comes second.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.

re: clever lyrics

Sondheim rules -- no questions

What I fond "clever" in Wicked (I can't believe I am adding to a Wicked thread) are the double meaning of many of songs that upon first hearing are totally lost on the audience/listener -- for example, No One Mourns the Wicked, actaully is about Glinda and not Elphie...personally I find the Nessa/fessa or brainless references too obvious and simple -- but that's just me

You can't stop my happiness cuz I like the way I am.
And you just can't stop my knife and fork when I see a Christmas Ham.
So if you don't like the way I look well, I just don't give a damn!

My favorite lyrics the in whole world.-Hairspray
