Yeah, that Engineer drama was interesting. I wonder what they would say at South Pacific if Liz McCartney had to go on for Bloody Mary?
As far as the whole "do you have to be Latino" thing... who gives a crap what other people say? Yes, the show is race specific, but a song is a song. Sing it!

Posted: 9/15/08 at 10:14pmand you have to be a former show girl to understand Follies. duh. and dying of consumption/French to get Les Miz.

Posted: 9/15/08 at 10:45pmWell, I wouldn't care if a non-Asian sang "The American Dream" or something at a concert. Nor would I say that you have to be Asian to "get" the show.

and dying of consumption/French
Okay, I just laughed far harder than it deserved to think of people dying of French. XD

I honestly think there are either only a handful of ridiculous fangirls out there saying these things over and over again, making it seem like it's a lot of people, or the people relaying these stories here are exaggerating and generalizing based on several comments they've come across. I find it very hard to believe that there are lots of Hispanics out there who seriously object to anyone but Hispanics singing ITH. And anyone who does is stupid and a complete bigot.
And as Hispanic myself, I know my community enough to say that they'd most likely be honored to finally have a piece of popular entertainment that portrays them in a way that other cultures can relate to, and without the painfully overused cliches and stereotypes.

It really makes me angry how people can make absurd comments like that, saying how those people had no right to sing In the Heights songs at a benefit just because they didn't have an ounce of Latino in them.
I don't really have much more to add to the debate, except that I agree with Weez - I think you stated your thoughts pretty well.

I hate when that happens, dying of French. but at one point, it might've been dying of Freedom, which is slightly ironic.

"I think one interpretation of THAT song is that it could be about being hurt and not necessarily about racial prejudice.
Oh, yes, you have a valid point right there."
I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

my friend deleted all of the heated comments but here's some of the lighter ones...
"Too much white girl"
"she says everything like a white girl."
"i am hispanic and i should be insulted that this white girl is singing it"
"who 'dis white gurl singin my stuff? LOL"
the more offensive comments were deleted last month...
re: controversy over 'ITH' material#35
Posted: 9/16/08 at 3:31pmThat is ridiculous. I am a white girl so maybe there are things in ITH that I don't relate to but the themes of home, family, and love are universal.

Posted: 9/16/08 at 3:42pmI chalk it up to immaturity. Just wait until they are old enough to see a gay white man sing And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going in a bar. Bitch, please.

Posted: 9/16/08 at 4:02pmLet's face it, how many white girls have you seen sing "Summertime"?

Posted: 9/16/08 at 4:30pmRemember Chita Rivera in West Side Story? Born in Washington, D.C. She should never have played Anita. AY! AY! AY!

As a latino, I might understand how people might not be keen on liking something only if it is badly protrayed. For example, I don't object to Natalie Wood playing Maria, I object to her being pancaked several skin tones darker because of it. I don't care who sings what, but if you're going to sing a song, make sure you can deliver it, it's like me singing a German aria when I can't pronounce the German. I would only be against a certain actor singing a certain song if they couldn't pronounce the words, because that's just detrimental you the performance and the material.
But hey, if you're white and can sing Piragua flawlessly with the spanish thrown in, all the more power to you!
