Love the film, love the show hated the revival. The revival couldn't hold a candle to the original production. I am with frontrowcentre2 on this one. It's simplicity is its brilliance.
i really didn't like it. i'm sorry, but i didn't like the book. i didn't like the plot, if there was one. (okay, there is. still...) i mean, the tapping was AMAZING. but, that's all that entertained me.
now, if jerry orbach was in it, i'd have LOVED it.

Ever have a day where you wake up..its a nasty storm,...you find out your grandmother died.....you go outside and watch your dog get runover by a car...your little brother has herpes..and you go to the bathroom and realize that you're completely constipated? That was what it felt like to sit through 42nd St. And I gave it a second chance...as I was begged by a friend to see it again...I went...to give it the benefit of the doubt.
I was still constipated...
absolutely..one of the most dumbest book shows written that truly didn't need to be revived.
yucky poopoo!
I never got to see the original and went into the revival expecting to be blown away -- I wasn't. I'm a tapper and was expecting to be wow-ed. Technically, the dancing was astounding; however, the revival seemed to be missing the magic that's able to take you to a different place and time.
I just saw this a few weeks ago for the 1st time. Very weak plot, equally weak character development, and the music is ok with a few bright spots. However with all of it's flaws, I found myself liking it. The dancing was great. I went into it knowing that I wasn't about to witness a night of life-changing theater, but to be entertained and entertained I was.
I think you have to know what to expect when going to see the show. SWEENY TODD it ain't. It's not supposed to be book heavy. It's a simple plot full of wonderful songs and production numbers. I think you have to have an appreciation for the old style of musical. You have to also understand the whole "hey kids, let's go out to the barn and put on a show" mentality. It is most definitely a very period piece. You go to the show for the song and dance aspect not the story.
I've never seen the show but one comment really bothered me . .
It wasn't Sweet Charity bad but Thoroughly Modern Millie was better.
Sweet Charity is far from being a "bad" show, it just may not be your type. It's a very old fashioned just relax and watch type of show.

I saw an excellent regional production of this on Saturday.
If you go expecting deep, meaningful theater, don't bother. What you get with 42nd Street is lots of fun: fun music, fun costumes (depends on production) and dancing. Lots of dancing. Its not meant to be deep, or thought provoking, just fun.
However, one thing I will say that I didn't like about it was that almost every number was a showstopper (at least in the production I saw, I don't know about the Broadway production). They all had huge dance breaks, and ended with a huge bit of harmony, and a full company pose. While each number was spectacular, its made the show somewhat choppy. The numbers were all entertaining to watch, the song endings became repetitive.

well, i liked the movie but not the revival. Since i didnt like the show, it's probably because of my age (15) I was expecting a huge spectacular that would bring the audience to their feet, but it didnt even get a standing ovation.
I'm a sucker for flashy musicals and an even bigger sucker for tap dancing, so I love the show.
But the book, is admittedly a lamentable mess.
There are better song and dance shows, namely Me and My Girl and Crazy for You.
One of my all time favorites.
Book is weak, because it isn't a book musical. It is a good, old fashioned dancing show. And SO much fun!

I love this thread.
Me when I'm asked about music:
Person: What kind of music do you listen to?
Me : Musical Theatre.
Person: Ew.
Me : But not like 42nd Street.
42nd Street is the kind of musical that makes non musical-theatre lovers hate musical theatre. Its songs are the epitome of generic show tunes. And when I saw it, the dancers were amazing. But the choreography was boring. I saw it three times, against my will.
I also didn't love TMM when I saw it. Probably because the leads were both understudies and BOTH made obvious mistakes (once even laughing on stage) and forgot lines. But I do love Jeanine Tesori's music when I listen to the OBCR or see it performed by other people.
