ok, i noticed this and i wanna know if anyone else agrees with me or saw this, too. during finale A when they bring mimi back up to marks apartment, everyone takes off their coats, everyone EXCEPT mark and joanne. joanne didnt really stand out to me, but i thought mark not taking off his coat was supposed to show how hes detached all the time. and he also stood the farthest away from mimi while everyone else was huddled around her. did anyone else see this or is it just me?

No, I didn't notice that, but now that you mention it, that's a good directorial choice (assuming that it was intentional).

um, isn't mark already inside when maureen and joanne bring mimi up?
That is an interesting observation. I never noticed it either except for Mark crouching outside of the little huddle around Mimi. But even then it never really stood out to me. That is a very intriguing thought, although wether it was even intentional or not is still in question.

well mark crouching outside of the huddle is definitely intentional, symbolizing his "detach{ment} from feeling alive"... but i'm still lost on the coat thing... isn't he inside with roger and collins?

This is what happens when you see a show like 7 times and dont even pay attention to the performance and start looking for flaws or start to wonder around the stage with your eyes.

apdarcey to answer your question, mark doesnt stay up there, he comes downstairs to help bring mimi up, and then once they lay her on the table, everyone else takes off their coats and huddles around her (joanne doesnt take off her coat, but she still goes to see if shes ok). mark doesnt offer his coat to warm up the freezing and hungry mimi, and doesnt really go to see if shes ok. all he does it carry her upstairs and then stay in the corner.
and actually BwayLeadman, i noticed that the first time i saw the show, hehe.
this was an observation from the eyes of someone who aspires to be a filmmaker like mark, just hopefully not dirt poor, lol.

well yeah... i noticed the seperation, i guess i just didn't realize he even had a coat on. haha.

haha, you were prolly too busy looking at mimi. i just happened to see mark standing off to the side and i wondered.
I've been going to Rent for 8 years, and I just figured out that Mark and Roger aren't in the same place during What You Own :)

haha, then i guess its safe to say you didnt notice what i was saying.
They aren't in the same place? Jeebus. I've gotta get more common sense.

I posted and had to ask about Mark and Roger being in the same place during WYO. They could have blocked it a little better to signify them not in the same place (maybe Roger up on the platform or something).
Since I've only seen Rent once, I didn't notice. Next time I see it, tho, I will look for the separation.
When I saw it...the blocking was absolutely horrid. I found myself wondering if they were here, if they were there, why is Mimi knocking on air, etc. etc. Good use of the little space they have (and the amount of space they have to cover throughout the story), but I do know that the fact that Cary and Matt were constantly locking eyes with each other alluded me to the fact that they were indeed in the same room.

If they have no heat inside, it makes sense Mark wears his coat all the time, no?

Then where are they? I've only seen the show twice, but I never got that. I feel a little dumb.

mark is outside the church i believe and roger is in santa fe maybe. its not really specific but thats what i would guess.

I was confused by this also. I'm going again in couple weeks and I'll try and follow better, but I'm thinking that Mark is normally away from the group through out most of the show. Hmm. Something to ponder.

What You Own takes place over the months that Roger is in Santa Fe and Mark is forced to live on his own. It's basically the song where they realize that they rely on each other so much as friends... the song where Roger realizes he needs to get back to NYC before he dies because that is his real home. Mark is watching the world around him collapse and he knows that Roger's clock is ticking and all he can do is watch. The end of the song is the point where they come together again and forgive each other after the fight.

Nice analysis, Kyle!
I've seen the show five times myself and never noticed they weren't in the same place either! =:-O
According to the liner notes WYO starts with Roger on his way to Santa Fe.
