so yesterday i met the president of the kennedy center (in dc), michael kaiser. we had a very elaborate discussion of musical theatre and its future here in dc and the nation. we focused a lot on the upcoming "mame" with baranski. the other thing he told me though was that the kennedy center is working on a show that it will produce within the next 2-3 years. a big production of a musical from the last 20 years. it was written for only piano accompaniment, and has been considered a "small" show. the kennedy center has been working and is continuing to work on making a full 20-piece orchestration for the musical. kaiser was reluctant to give the name though because the official announcement has not been made. anyway, i thought i would put my other musical theatre junkies to work, any ideas?
recap:
-from the last 20 years
-generally considered a small show
-written for only piano accompaniment.

The Fantasticks?
Myths and Hymns (Saturn Returns)

myths and hymns and elegies were my two thoughts. the fantasticks is more than 50 years old. so not that.
Long shot wild guess, but "By Jeeves" maybe? I know it makes no sense whatsoever, but I can't think of any others. Maybe "Rent," which maybe in its early stages only used piano." I don't honestly have a clue though...
Myths and Hymns is a great guess
I know that this is a little old, but could it be the Falsettos Trilogy? Or Nunsense?
i dont know, but i am definitely intrigued.

well he said that it's always performed with only piano. this would be the first time big orchestrations were being used. i would love falsettos, but i believe it was written with orchestrations, and is generally performed with them at least.
Ruthless?
Even most small shows use something other than "just piano" so it is a bit perplexing. The Fantasticks had harp and percussion as well as piano, and it was about as small as a show gets.
The Fantasticks also had a touring version some years ago, with a full orchestration.
Really?! What did the orchestrations sound like? How did it affect the show?

needless to say, apparently it's going to sound amazing to hear this score with a 20 piece orchestration.
i'm really thinking myths and hymns...
floyd collins had full orchestration, right?
It was a "30th Anniversary" tour in 1990, starring Robert Goulet as El Gallo. I didn't see it, so I don't know what it sounded like. But the full orchestration is available for rental at Music Theatre International.
The Cradle Will Rock has traditionally been performed with only piano. Its last revibal was almost 60 years though. There was a movie made in 1999 with some pretty big names.
This is a long shot but Last 5 Years
that would be nice, it is actually a "small show"
Cradle Will Rock is the first thing I thought of too...
