did anyone else want to kill him during la cage? i hated him... i was really surprised too becasue i've seen him in other things and loved him (namely bounce at the kennedy center in dc)... but he was atrocious in la cage... yes, his singing voice was fine... but his acting... he was just so whiney and bratty and annoying... and that pony-tail... oh my god... i just wanted to die... rather to kill him... and lord almighty... there was more sexual tension between him and daniel davis than angela gaylor... he could not seem less interested in a girl... they need someone with testosterone to play this part because gavin sure didn't do it... he was way to gay, which leads me to ask, is he gay in real life? becuase if that was his acting it was truly atrocious... but he wasn't like that when i saw him before... so i'm hoping they just cast the wrong person and it was too much gavin showing, and not enough jean-michel...
however... i did love the production and everything except gavin!

i'm going to see la cage in march...i'll tell you what i think. but, I saw him in an unfinished pete mills show called "the flood" and he knocked my socks off. Maybe he was having an off night. And yeah, i don't like the long hair either, but my boyfriend is friends with Gavin, I'll ask him if he's gay for ya!

Posted: 1/20/05 at 5:10pmI totally agree; I have seen the show five times (including three times in previews) and, without a doubt he is the most feminine thing in the show. Whether he is gay or not is irrelavant, his acting is horrendous and would seem to be much more at home in high school drama club. Yes, he sings beautifully, but I still don't see his audience appeal. Updated On: 1/20/05 at 05:10 PM

Posted: 1/20/05 at 5:20pmthanks tommy, i agree with you... i just thought he was horrendous... i didn't mean anything by it, just i was wondering if this was an "acting choice", like a kid who grew up is such a gay environment would turn out that way even if he was straight, or if it was just his personality coming through... i didn't mean anything by it, really... sorry about that confusion... andrew

Posted: 1/20/05 at 5:54pmI'm sorry but I loved him in this show. But, maybe it's cuz I'm just blinded by his beauty. Still, his singing is superb. I don't know when you saw this show but his acting was not whiny and bratty for me. Besides he is supposed to be somewhat of a brat. He has rich club owning parents. Even Georges talks about how he's being a brat and how they've given him everything he's ever wanted. And he follows it up with "Have you ever wanted for anything?" So, even though he's gotten everything he's wanted in life...he still wants this. So the character, not Gavin, is supposed to be acting bratty and whining to his father about Albin because he doesn't want to lose the love of his life. The chemistry between him and Anne was just fine and his physical comedy with some of the props in the house is hysterical. I don't know what Gavin Creel you saw, but the one I saw was an exceprional performer.

Joshua, I'm glad that someone else has noticed an oddity about his eyes. I'm not so sure that the problem is that he is cross-eyed. It is just that his eyes are two different sizes, which seems to make him appear crossed-eyed. Very odd.

There is a list of roles in musical theatre that we have begun to call the Sydney Chaplin List since all of his roles seem to be on it. They are utterly thankless roles in musical theatre. They are most entirely male roles.
Nick Arnstein
Whatsisname from Bells Are Ringing
Same Character in Subways Are For Sleeping
and the son, Jean Michel, in La Cage.
These are thankless parts, and it is almost impossible to look really good doing this type of role.
Gavin at least has the blessing of being attractive and wearing the tightest slacks on The Street.

his eyes are really funny...if you ever saw eloise at the plaza you would know
but he is so talented, i saw him at the showpeople concert last monday and he was INCREDIBLE. i haven't ever seen him act though (well, except for in an eloise movie) so i can't really comment on that

I have to agree. I loved his singing voice but his acting just wasn't all that great when I saw it. I felt like I could go up there and recite the lines. I don't think the part is completely useless, either. There's some good matieral there for him to work with. Maybe he will grow into it more.
apdarcey, I also thought there was more of an attraction between him and Daniel Davis than him and Angela Gaylor. Funny stuff.

Posted: 1/21/05 at 6:32pmCaught a matinee of "La Cage" about a month ago. Gavin was quite good, I thought. Excellent production. Beach and Davis have incredible chemistry. Beach is an amazing Albin. BTW, Creel is gay in real life.

i thought it was very appropriate for him to come off as a mamma's boy when they go on and on about how Albin raised him.
So hes a softie (with a killer smile)... doesnt make him gay...
I did post my full review but I think its drifted to page 2.

I ADORE Gavin Creel. I will never forget seeing him as Nick in the North American tour of Fame! This was years ago, and I distinctly remember thinking... give him a few years, he'll have MANY Broadway credits to his name. And he is certainly working on that. And I think he's a wonderful actor, singer, and all around performer.
That said, he was the gayest part of La Cage. I was sad for him. It took much energy not to blame it on the direction, an off night, etc...
P.S. I don't think Nick Arnstein is a completely thankless role. And Jeff Moss certainly isn't. As played by Marc Kudisch, definitely not! "I Met a Girl!"... sigh...
