C'mon, Bryan, think for a minute: GLORY DAYS with a cast of 4 and just a few musicians will cost a lot less to record than CRY BABY with a large cast and full orchestra.
A recording of CRY BABY would do nothing to help sell the rights to small community theaters and colleges. A recording of GLORY DAYS would be powerful sales tool for a musical that almost any school/community theater with limited means and talent could mount.
(I'm sure that 20 years from now, when the revival cast recording of N2N is released, Bryan will still be moaning about CRY BABY!)

Posted: 7/3/09 at 7:34amWhy would community theatres choose to put on bad musicals like "The Story of My Life" or "Glory Days?" Just because these shows have small casts doesn't make them any less bad.

Why do you say THE STORY OF MY LIFE is a "bad" show. Listen to the cast album: It is a terrific example of a character study show. Not long on plot but powerful in the relationships it details.
Can't speak on GLORY DAYS but a friend who did see it felt the score was better than the book. I look forward to hearing the recording so I can judge its merits for myself.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I said "The Story of My Life" was a bad show, because I saw it, and felt it was bad. I can't bring myself to listen to the recording because hearing it once was one time too many for me.
As for "Glory Days," I agree with your friend. The score was better than the book. But the book was terrible, and I felt the score wasn't great either. But I'll be willing to listen to it when it comes out on cd.
