Clues:
*Mary Martin starred in the revival
*Written before 1960
*3 well known songs
*2 of which are sung by the same character
*ensemble show
*one male character doesn't come in until the end and he's important to the plot
If you have any idead could you please post them?

Posted: 9/23/04 at 12:38pmI have to back StickToPriest up, I am 90% sure she never starred in a revival of a musical. In her whole career I think she only starred in one revival and that was a play "The Skin of Our Teeth" in the late 50's.

Posted: 9/23/04 at 2:11pmCould they be thinking that the "Peter Pan" she starred in was a revival? There were several versions of Peter Pan on Broadway before the Martin one (as Cpn Hook would most certainly remind us of), but Martin's was technically an original production since it had a brand new score.

Well, none of the shows she did on B'way fit the requirements.
As Margo said, the closest is Peter Pan.
*Mary Martin starred in the revival (No, it was original)
*Written before 1960 (Yes, written in the '50s)
*3 well known songs (This one is rather ambiguous, what constitutes "well-known")
*2 of which are sung by the same character (As is this one)
*ensemble show (One could argue, if you stretch it, that Perter Pan is an ensemble show, but i wouldn't consider it one)
*one male character doesn't come in until the end and he's important to the plot (Captain Hook appears in the second Act)
*February (Peter Pan closed in February 1955)

Well, my director just said...
"I'd SWEAR it was a revival. Actually - it was revived in 99. I don't know what you'd call her stint in it! Maybe it was the original?"
Don't know what she means by that...but thank you all sooo much for looking into this for me

Annie Get Your Gun was revived with Bernadette Peters in February of 1999 -- I assume that's the show.
Ethel Merman created the role and played the entire original Broadway run, as well as a 1966 revival at Lincoln Center.
The only Broadway revivals were the '66 and '99.
Mary Martin never played the role in New York -- only on the road and in stock. She also played the role in a tv production of the show in the 50's with John Raitt and the rest of the touring cast of the show.

Posted: 9/23/04 at 5:47pmI think its Annie Get Your Gun ... though I'm not sure who the important male character at the end is. In any case it doesn't say she starred in the revival on Broadway does it? Could a tour be considered as a revival? Though I swear she sings more the 2 songs .... I guess those are the only solo numbers though.

Posted: 9/23/04 at 5:57pmi am almost sure the there is more than 2 solo songs for the lead in annie get your gun

well it doesnt say that those two songs are sung by the lead, but just that they are sung by the same character and are 2 of the 3 really famous songs...did i get that right? mebbe these points help
- peter pan and charlie brown have small casts, if anything, peter pan might be considered ensamble, but definetely not charlie brown
- the REALLY famous songs (and im thinking that regular, non-theater people might know about is what defines really famous, something the audience would recognize) in annie get your gun are: no business like show business (sung by Frank and company), anything you can do i can do better (duet between Annie and Frank), and i got the sun in the morning (sung by Annie)...that last song might be replaced by doing what comes naturally (Annie, Kids, and Foster WIlson), moonshine lullaby, they say its wonderful (annie or annie and frank im not sure)
- the reaaaally famous songs in kiss me kate are "so in love" (sung by lily/kate and later the reprise by fred/petrurchio?), too darn hot (sung by chorus, or bianca in the film version) always true to you (bianca or bianca and billy in the film), and if you REAAALLY wanna push it you could say that another opening, another show is famous, but not really jejej
- the total number of solo songs for Annie in annie get your gun are 4 (if you count a few reprises) and she also sings a few songs with part of the company.
- depending on who you think the main character is, fred and lili have 1 duet, and 3 songs in which they sing with the chorus and each other. fred has a total of 4 songs by himself, and lily has 3 songs by herself.
- one of the songs in kiss me kate might be considered "famous" because the lyrics are actually quoted lines from Shakespeare's the taming of the shrew, but i doubt that counts.
so, if u start on the fact that it was revived in 99, and then keep going from there, i think your best best is still annie get your gun, kiss me kate possibly comming in in second place. anyway if ur teacher can tell you where or when the plot is set, or who composed the music, u can probably crack it.

Posted: 9/23/04 at 6:50pmWell, Mary Martin was never in Kiss Me Kate -- on Broadway or anywhere else to my knowledge. So it's Annie or Peter which were both Martin shows revived in 1999.
