re: help picking a cast recording

Urinetown is about a town that has a water shortage, so they regulate it by having citizens "pay to pee". It backfires and a rebellion is staged. Notable cast members include Hunter Foster( Little Shop), Nancy Opel (currently in Fiddler) and Jennifer Laura Thompson (Wicked).

I’d also give Side Show a try.

William Finn (who wrote Spelling Bee) did A New Brain. It is a very (pardon the pun) cerebral, and features great work by Malcolm Gets, Norm Lewis, Mary Testa, Chip Zein, and Kristin Chenoweth.

Seems like you have the same taste as me and I didn't really like Songs for a new World & Parade, but loved Last 5 Years. Tick, tick, boom is great, there are a few songs I don't really care for, but overall I love it. My suggestion to is to just go to amazon.com and look up the shows your interested in and listen to a few sound clips just to hear what its about. I use to only be into contemporary musical theater, but i'm slowly working my way back. I recently bought Saturday Night by Sondheim and even though its not an "old" show, it has an "old" show feel to it and I love it.

PS
Whats Spitfire Grill & Ballroom - never heard of those. I looked them up but could not find anything about them.

How about A Chorus Line?

Classic, awesome, funny, must-have.

Oh also, I'd highly recommend one of the two Wild Party recordings (personally I prefer Lippa's...Julia Murney is throughly amazing).

Honey, I don't produce theater. I am theater.

re: help picking a cast recording

Given what your current recordings list consists of, I would assume you'd love any of the following:

*Songs for A New World
*Urinetown
*Wild Party (Lippa)
*You're a Good Man Charlie Brown
"...But Kungurtseva reels off multiple fouettes and the tape is stopped so she can take a bow. The Jester, an abomination introduced to Swan Lake in Soviet times, extorts applause from the audience. The cuts don't help the storytelling, the production is bare bones and they go for the '50s-style happy ending. The audience cheers like mad at the end. It's the Russian ballet, after all..."
