Did they mean diction-wise or plot-wise? The plot is hardly there, so it's not hard to follow at all.
My preference
1. Book of Mormon
2. Something Rotten
3. Avenue Q
Seen Book of Mormon four times now. Seeing it again next Saturday.
I have not seen BOM but have seen "Something Rotten" recently and have see "Avenue Q". They are both funny but in the end I would pick "Something Rotten" because I wanted to see Brian D'arcy James and Christian Boyle.

1) BOM
2) AVE Q
3) SR
Book of Mormon is the funniest, laugh out loud musical of all time IMO and combines with the most clever and catchy songs of the three
AVe Q is also a classic, really really funny with fantastic songs(same songwriter as mormon Lopez)
SR was also really really funny, with great songs
we are VERY VERY lucky to have three shows of this caliber of musical comedy currently playing in NY

i.e. I didn't like Something Rotten.
OK . To each his own. We hated The Anarchist and we love Mamet. Loved Rotten
