innovative marketing campaigns

Today I was looking through my box of old broadway memorabilia and saw all my Playbills....including one of my favorites....Avenue Q.

Which got me thinking of the amazingly innovative Tony campaign that Avenue Q ran.

What other marketing campaigns do people think were especially great or especially bad?

The CHICAGO reival marketing has been the best campaign since 1996! Look what they did for that show. There campaign certianley gets your attention. It makes a bold promise for what you will see and it delivers that promise. It gets my vote.

I think that Rent's initial campaign was pretty brilliant. It was just so gritty and edgy-looking and it didn't look like anything else at the time.

The latterday advertising wasn't as good, but that first OBC poster was just brilliant.

I dunno if this is technically innovative but I love "Xanadu on Broadway! Seriously."

^ I didn't hate it, but it didn't fit the show nearly as well as the old-school marketing.

Also a big "amen" to Chicago's marketing. Brilliant brilliant advertising.

I hated The Drowsy Chaperone's marketing campaign. Bob Martin's face on a poster? What?

Xanadu has a great marketing campaign.

Xandu's new poster looks great. Chicago, has a done a wonderful job too. Especially on their street displays. Everything looks good in London. I like Wicked's logo too.

I thought Drowsy's initial advertising worked but the newer poster didn't really sell the show. The commercial with Bob interviewing people was very funny. I liked the wall poster in the drive-way, under the Marquis. I thought though that showcasing Bob Saget the way that they did later was the wrong direction to go in. Sell the show that's on the stage. That works best to me. I liked the simple red logo as well. It was classy and got my attention. I wanted to know more about the show.

The Little Mermaid's stuff looks great. Luckily, they didn't play up that awful costume of Ursula's. Poor Sherrie.

Hairspray I think has done a very good job with their advertising. Using the spray can was funny and creative. I didn't like the Movie Poster but all the Stage ones looked well done to me.

I'm just dreading more Shrek stuff all over the place. I'm so grateful my kids have grown up. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't cover cereal boxes and other food products with these images. I have not bought some things just so I don't have to look at that picture all of the time. Overkill. It will still do well on stage, as long as they get a little creative and give a good show.
