spiderdj82, it sounds like you haven't heard any really good opera singers. And I don't mean most of your mainstream people. There are a lot of opera singers that just scream (much to my dismay). Listen to people like Leontyne Price or Placido Domingo, and you'll find out what vibrato should sound like. When it's wacky, that means that there's tension in the voice. National Association for Teachers of Singing used to not recommend voice lessons for children for a reason (aka Charlotte Church). Vibrato is created when the vocal folds vibrate with complete freedom (in belting, it's a little different, but there still should be some vibrato) in mature voices. If it is even, you know that it's free: otherwise it's forced, which is dangerous.

I'm not a fan of Julia Megines (largely due to her performance on the Rags recording).
Also, I can only take Merman in small doses.

Yeah Ethel Merman of course. I think of Karen Ziemba as Ethel Merman with musicality. She can hit the back of the house (without a mic, if that is necessary to clarify), and the voice isn't what you'd necessarily call pretty, but it's musical and phrased and you want to listen to it.

Ethel Merman has always annoyed me. And my mom thinks she's betetr than Bernadette Peters! We got into a heated argument about that.

to be honest, i don't see what's so great about bernadette peters. i don't think her voice is as good as people think it is. that's just my opinion though.

I don't think she's amazingly wonderful that we should all bow and exalt her, but she's A LOT better than Ethel Merman.

I would much rather hear Bernadette Peters' version of "Unexpected Song" than the one Sarah Brightman attempted to sing (there's a recording of it on an ALW anthology. All I remember about the collection is that it has six CDs).

I agree with TheQuibbler.
She's such an incredibly gifted actress that she does more than just "sing" the songs.
Into the Woods provides some great examples of that.

You know who has THE most annoying speaking voice? Anne Heche. Hearing her speak makes me want to hurl myself through a window.

Singing... I can't think of anyone whose voice I absolutely can't stand (among Broadway people anyway), but at some points, Daphne Rubin-Vega and MJW can get really annoying.

Bernadette has a nice voice but it's not fantastic. I think it's beautiful in "Song and Dance" but her "Gypsy" didn't quite do it for me.

Patti LuPone's voice drives me insane. The only time I actually liked her singing was her rendition of "Being Alive" in the Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall. And even then she slips temporarily into her LuPone-ness.

Ethel Merman's voice took me a while to get used to. Her voice is just...a lot to take. That's the only way I can describe it.

And...I know this a very unpopular opinion, but I don't particularly like Audra McDonald's voice. She has good range and technique and is especially adept at singing in anguish, but I don't find her voice beautiful. I don't see what the big fuss is about her singing. I've heard her in Ragtimte and the Seven Sins concert she did. Am I missing something?

Ok so luvtheEmcee just totally stole that from me but whatever! I just despise Anne Heche's voice, it seriously makes me want to die! I jump for the remote anytime she shows up!

Ohh ok so I cannot stand the singing voice of Christy Carlson Ramono...ugh she is just sooo awful. She should not be allowed anywhere near Broadway.

Ok so just to be predictable...I hate Susan Egan's voice!!! I promise guys I won't go on a rant now!!

Oh and also although this is just more of a bad performance all together but David Hasselhoff!

Barbara Cook. Her technique is good, but I don't like the actual sound.

Huh. I never had anything against Rebecca Luker, but I've only heard her in Showboat and Strike Up the Band.

I forgot to mention that Jean Darling, who played Carrie Pipperidge in the OBC of Carousel, has an extremely irritating voice as well. I just can't get used to the way she sings "June is Bustin' Out All Over."

Audra MacDonald is a goddess! Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't she go to Julliard for classical voice? Now that says something, don't you think!
If you listen to her solo CD's you will note her amazing technique and expression. It's so great because there was virtually no mechanical and studio altering in her recordings on her CD's. And when Audra DOES belt, it is quite healthy belting and she does it in a very tasteful way. She knows just the right combination of belt and legit, which I think always makes someone much more interesting.
Also, the mental image I get when hearing MJW sing is just someone violent shaking her body to produce that sound and vibrato. You know?
And if you want to hear some REALLY annoying voices.. Go and listen to the OBCR of Julie Andrews in "The Boyfriend". Not Julie Andrews. Just almost all of her co-stars.
Dulcie anyone?
And WHY does Maisy literally YELL her "Safety in Numbers" ?!?!
Someone PLEASE tell me they know this CD!
