kelsey Gramer Confirmed for New York La Cage aux Folles

Stage and screen actor Kelsey Grammer, best known for his Emmy-winning work on TV's "Frasier," will co-star in the upcoming Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles.

As previously reported, London's critically acclaimed Menier Chocolate Factory production of Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's hit musical La Cage aux Folles will open April 18, 2010, at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway.

Grammer will play the role of Georges, the owner/emcee of the St. Tropez nightclub. In a statement, Grammer said, "I had a wonderful experience playing Henry Higgins in the New York Philharmonic's My Fair Lady in 2007, which made me long to perform in a musical on Broadway. Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's wonderfully funny and touching show is about being true to yourself and the challenges you face as a parent, as a spouse and as a family. I cannot wait to work with Douglas Hodge and to sing these magnificent songs every night."

As good as kelsey Gramer maybe, i don't know, as I do not know his work, but I am against him in this production, instead the wonderful Phillip Quast or Denis Lawson should of been given the nod to star along side Denis Lawson.

I know many of you agree?

I think this is a good bit of casting, i think he will do the role justice, and it'll also attract an audience outside the regular musical theatre audience audience, which might just make this INCREDIBLE production a hit!

I just HOPE he is still in it, in August when I go to NYC!

I agree with both above posters-he wouldn't be my choice, I'd rather have seen Lawson/Quast transfer too. On the other hand Grammer will bring in audiences and as I really want this fabulous production to do well I'm in favour (obviously as long as he does it justice-I don't really know his work so I also can't comment.)

Good luck to all involved I say-here's to it doing better than the last production of la cage to hit the great white way!

Me thinks too.
'Frasier' is still HUGE in the States (its not often they make good TV!).
A bigger slice of the normal theatre going public in New York will now sample the delights of this little big show.

It's hard to predict how good Grammer will be in La Cage - but he's played the title role in Sweeney Todd (in LA back in 1999 opposite Christine Baranski), so he should be able to sing! I've not seen him on stage but I thought he was great in the TV movie of Alan Menken's Christmas Carol. And he's definitely big box office in the US.

Conaires - I think it's highly likely he will still be in the show in August (provided the show does well enough to run that long). I read a few days ago that apparently the plans are that he will switch roles after Douglas Hodge departs and will play Albin!

On a separate note - remember that the last Frasier cast member who took on a Broadway musical role - David Hyde Pierce - walked away with the Tony!

Kelsey Grammer is a good choice for Georges and he will put bum on seats but Douglas Hodge is the star of the show and he should get a Tony nomination for Zaza although I wouldn't be surprised if they both get nominations.

I've heard that Phillip Quast doesn't want to do Broadway for some reason. Not sure about Denis Lawson. (Incidentally, I loved Quast's performance when I saw the production.)

I think those complaining about Lawson or Quast not being in the Broadway production have to remember that this Broadway revival has a different set of challenges than the current London production. Broadway's 2010 La Cage has to overcome memories of the indifferently received, soft-selling 2004 revival.

If Kelsey Grammer brings media attention and advance sales to the Broadway production (not to mention that he should fare well with the role), then it's some insurance that people will come in the door for Grammer and then discover and fall in love with Hodge.

I can imagine Grammer being excellent in this role.

Denis Lawson was a fine Georges who had good chemistry with (the sensational) Douglas Hodge, but he (Lawson) was definitely not transfer-worthy. Philip Quast's perfect performance would I'm sure get great reviews, but he didn't sell tickets in London and is presumably even less well-known in New York, so I can see why they'd want a "name" if they want the show to run more than a couple of weeks!

I made a good point that Denis Lawson or Phillip Quast, should have got the gig as they were brilliant in the role originally but everyone who has contributed to this thread has countered that with excellent comments.

So do you go with someone who can deliver the role to perfection or do you go with a star like Kelsey Grammer, who could get savaged by the reviewers.

For - Look at the play 'A Steady Rain' with A list stars such as Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig, it is virtually sold out to even stand outside the theatre, did not get great reviews but the names pulled the punters in.

Against - '9-5 the musical', did not set Broadway on fire, even with Alison Jarney who found fame with Westwing, who I assume is a big household name in the States.

So the dilemma is do you go for a big name (stunt casting), who could be detrimental to the role as Georges or not a big name but who will deleiver a stellar performance?

It's an ATG production, right? (well, Sonia Friedman I guess but there's not much difference.)

The casting of an ATG show goes as follows:

i) Find the celebrity with the best notoriety:cost ratio (talent a bonus.)
ii) ???
iii) PROFIT

This is the same production they've already cast the negligably-voiced Graham Norton and the too-straight-for-Will-and-Grace John Barrowman in. It's a moot point when it comes to ATG shows; stunt casting all the way.

Besides, we know Grammer can sing (he was reportedly an excellent Sweeney) and is a fine comic actor, plus since his new TV show HANK has just bombed (second time in as many years a show he's starred in's been axed) he'll be glad for the work and come cheaper than usual. It's a win-win situation all round!

And... well, it's GEORGES, of all people. Leaving aside my own dislike of LA CAGE as a show it's not a part that people will hate you for if you don't knock it out the ball park; there's not much TO knock out the ball park, it's a relatively understated part (or at least it was when I saw this production with Quast.)

From a producing perspective, if stunt casting brings the punters in then sod the critical reception. This is the principal Chicago has been operating on for years, after all. The entirety of the Drury Lane production of Oliver! has essentially been stunt cast, and I don't think the producers regret that too much...

I don'y think hes a bad choice but i don;t think hes a draw.
People wont even watch his TV shows (His latest Hank was axed after half a season and his last show also got the axe early on)

re: kelsey Gramer Confirmed for New York La Cage aux Folles

I think you underestimate his recognition factor here. Despite the two failed sitcoms, "Frasier" is on endless syndication and Grammer's face and voice are instantly identifiable. David Hyde Pierce was the factor that brought people into the theatre for Curtains and I think Kelsey Grammer will have a similar effect for La Cage.

Hmmm i dunno, im sure he will bring his fans in but ijust don't think his appeal is that wide right now, hell if people dont wanna watch him on TV for free then why would they pay out 100 plus dollars?

I think DHP was lucky in the sense that after Frasier he didnt have some HUGE tv misteps

re: kelsey Gramer Confirmed for New York La Cage aux Folles

I absolutely LOVE this casting! Kelsey Grammer is a much-loved actor who can surely be forgiven a couple of recent mis-steps in TV-land. He hasn't had much luck with theatre roles in the past but I can see him bringing just the perfect amount of charm, bombast, singing ability and ultimate humility to the role of Georges.

I'll wager it now that people will be complaining he's just 'playing Frasier/himself' probably from before he even begins previews (much as I've read ridiculous comments stating that DHP only 'plays himself/Niles' in threads about his Broadway successes so far).
