now that we know both talented ladies will (yes..will) get the chance to win the tony, who do you think is the favorite?
i vote kristen. she has the funnier part and is very well liked in the theater community. but she does already have a tony.
idina's part is more fleshed out and she does a great job. she doesn't have a tony.
(special note: please do not post your "donna murphy is gonna win" or "the avenue q chick is gonna take it" thoughts here. this ain't the place)
KRISTIN
Idina, no question. Kristen is fabulous but her part is SO much easier. All her quirks and comdic charm is written directly into the role; while Idina has to take the less-blatant Elphaba and truly bring her to life... which she does amazingly. And, her vocals are so outstanding and mind-blowing I want to have her children! (In a totally heterosexual way!)

There have been SO many of these threads and they all forget one thing. Although Kristin and Idina both are incredible and have big chances of taking home the Tony THEY WILL NOT BE THE ONLY NOMINEES NOR WILL THEY BE THE ONLY NOMINEES WITH A CHANCE. Donna Murphy, Tonya Pinkins, and Stephanie d'Abruzzo all have considerable chances in this category, especially the latter two. So don't rule out all these women just yet. All the leading ladies who will most likely be nominated are brillantly talented. I know that Dude expressed that he didn't want this said, but I think it is a very valid point.
But answering the initial question of the thread, I'm not sure who I want to win. Of course, I am biased because in my opinion Kristin Chenoweth is the brightest talent to hit the Great White Way in some time. But if I had to choose I would say Idina. Idina really came out of her shell in this role and proved to New York that she is a true blue bona fide Broadway star. Good job Idina! In all accouints I think both of the women are excellent and even if neither of them win this time around I am sure that they will have MANY chances to take the award home after this year.

As much as both of them rock my world Id like to see Idina win and think she will.
My vote goes to Idina. As much as I like Kristin, I strongly feel that Idina's performance deserves to be recognized. After all, she is playing a character that most people grew up scared to death of, and she totally wins the audience over with her first song and has us rooting for the little green underdog.

Donna Murphy -- hands down

Actually, I agree with logan30, but since we were just asked to choose between Idina and Kristin I did.
My vote goes to Idina, because, as someone mentioned, she has to play a harder role. I think Idina is so talented, and I think she deserves the Tony. I hope she wins.
Donna and Stephanie don't have a chance. it's all about IDINA, baby!!!!

I vote for Stephanie D'Abruzzo, with Donna Murphy as my second choice. They both kinda rocked, in that whole way of kicking ass they have.
My brother and I were having this argument. My brother said Kristin should win because no one else could play that role like her. She was absolutely perfect for the role, and no one can fill her shoes.
Well, the role WAS written for her. I think Idina should win because she reaLLY shines in her role, and really shows her own talents while staying true to the material, and is an extremely talented newcomer who most definitely deserves to be recognized with the award.

Dude is trying to enforce Dude's own sense of myopia on this topic. Sad really.

They will split the Wicked vote, clearing the way for someone else. Neither will win.
I think Idina deserves it, but Kristin will definitley win it. As for Avenue Q, I'd like to see John Tartaglia win something
IDINA MENZEL!
(even though she wont win.. they will split the votes )

Idina will win. Kristin has a Tony and Donna has two so the vote will swing to Idina.
I think the real battle will be between Tonya Pinkins and Donna Murphy.
What's really sad are idiots who can't bother to offer an opinion on a thread and just take up space so they can have their ego stroked.
But onto the topic:
Kristen is the likely winner. A favorite (rightfully so) of the theater community and gives a knock out performance.
Donna has two Tony awards already. Her performance is nothing uprising or new. And Avenue Q....well...it's gonna be stay a side street.

Yes, your eight minute reply time gives you seven whole minutes more moral superiority than me.
Both girls in Wicked are excellent, but I wonder if the Times'(and others) support of Chenoweth hurts Menzel's chances. Chenoweth has a crowd pleasing role, even if Wicked is more Elphaba's journey. I do think by being in the same category, Chenoweth and Menzel could split voters. (Even in this thread, both ladies have their partisans.)
Murphy earned raves in a star vehicle and is the reason Wonderful Town was revived in the first place. The production of Wonderful Town earned respectful notices, but the reviews were generally all about Donna. Depending on what happens with Fiddler and Assassins (if Assassins ends up a revival), a Tony for Murphy could be a way for voters to award Wonderful Town if it ends up that something else looks likelier to take Best Revival of a Musical.
Tonya Pinkins also gives an outstanding performance in Caroline, and if the production moves, as seems likely, I think she's a major contender as well, though I think Murphy may still have an edge.
The thing about Murphy is that it's not THAT big of a shock she was playing Ruth Sherwood in the revival. she did it in Encores! and sang "100 easy ways" at tons of benefits, but is a critics fave. As is Kristin, but she wasn't as surprisingly excellent in 'Wicked' as everyone says she was. In workshops they realized how great she was and literally rewrote the role of Glinda to make Kristin a starring role. Idina however, like gherbert says, breaks out of her shell in this show. She has all of Broadway blown away by her talent. And magruder, the Ny Times has never been capable of ruining anyones chances of winning a Tony. such is the case in Thoroughly Modern Millie, or Les Miserables (yes, it did receive mixed to downbeat reviews when it opened). Idina has a serio9us chance of winning, but so does Donna or Kristin or Tonya (if Caroline moves). My personal vote goes to Idina though. enough said.
I know that the Times doesn't determine the outcome of the Tonys - otherwise, Dreamgirls and Sunday in the Park with George would have been Best Musical winners. Still, Brantley clearly favored Chenoweth and I'm wondering if that type of endorsement clouds Menzel's chances. (Some people only read what the Times has to say on a new show). Just trying to handicap the race as it seems to be playing out. But hey, by June, that could be forgotten, and it could be a truly level playing field. And I'd love for Idina to win her first Tony. She's a terrific talent.
