you can not tell me MC's long note in the 2nd act of DOTV wasnt pre-recorded... i saw the show 2 times and one of those times, his mouth was half closed while singing...while the minsk was half full..
Also Mamma Mia, I know from first hand seeing the show with some members of this board together one night the sweetner track during "gimme gimme gimme" went wrong and it kept going "gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme a man man man man man man man" and the cast stopped singing and kind of looked around clueless...it also happened another time during "voulez vous" people involved with the show should also know to change the finale for u/s so you dont hear Pitre during "Dancing Queen"..
I think Hairspray might even use "sweetner" tracks for "you cant stop the beat"... it's so the actors can sound flawless when they are dancing as well (as stated in posts above).

It (31 seconds, 19 count, 6 measures...Yes I am looking at the sheet music, hahaha)! The reason his mouth was smaller is just because he was probably trying not to blow his air supply all in the first three measures of the cadence. If you watch some of their rehearsal videos, you we see that he is completely carrying the note through in one entire phrase, it is quite an amazing thing to watch. Also, notice the word that he was pronouncing "More"....Your mouth tends to be smaller when you're making an "O" sound! Sorry for that musical rambling...Whew...THE END!!!
See Ya!

is this thread still about lip or live singing? .... Lipsynching is not a #1 choice. But, hey it's part of the business, just like other tech. choices. I'd rather enojy a production that has a little lip when needed than walk out thinking the show was weak.
Now...if we're talking about a major solo number, get someone in there who has the chops and can do the job. But if it's an occassional ensamble song or a scene that requires a lot of action and strong vocals, get the job done right whatever it takes.
Unmiked music is for productions on a shoestring or a piano bar.
Oh! and as far a DOVT, two of my buds were in this stinker and I told them both it just wasn't "sponge worthy". And 99% of it was live!

I'm sorry that this rumor about lipsynching in Dance of the Vampires has come up again. The show had enough *real* problems.
Cast member Ray McCleod, who was there from the first rehearsal to the last show was asked, and he said, "Everything was live except the singing of the bat entrance into the garrett
(which he sang along with), the one line in
Red Boots and odd bits of dialogue,
The voice of the bat. The laugh at the end of the show as he burns...
Nothing dramatic."
I believe him.

Posted: 1/6/04 at 5:37amwhoever said that hairspray's *you can't stop the beat* has a track was correct...because everyone onstage (including the leads) are dancing (full out) they use the track because that song is so hard to understand and doesn't sound good if it is not fully supported and articulated (which is difficult while doing that big dance number). It makes sense though, considering that 3 of the principle characters are overweight (tracy, edna, and motormouth maybelle) and one is like, 70 (wilbur).

Posted: 1/6/04 at 12:51pmWell they had to sing it at one time to at least have it on tape to lip sync to so you are still hearing them "perform" not like Milli Vinilli :)

Bulldog - I really enjoyed Contact for what it was, which was not a musical. The producers billed Contact and Movin' Out as "musicals" to sell tickets. They know they won't get the audiences for shows listed as "ballets" (what they really are). It was a shame what it did to the Tonys, though.
PB ENT 2 - "sponge worthy" LOL !! I remember that episode!
