They did have the stage version ending in the original cut of the film, but in the early screenings people hated that Audrey and Seymore gets eaten so they changed it.
When LSOH was filmed they kept the original ending, everyone dies, they even went so far as to film sequences where the Audrey II goes on a rampage and starts destroying NYC to the tune of "Don't Feed The Plants". This ending didn't go over well with test audiences in several markets, they expected our hero and heroine to live happily ever after.
Warners/Geffen went back to the drawing board and after much debate decided to change the ending fearing the original ending would have a negative impact. The new ending was filmed months after the film had already wrapped up production.
Tisha Campbell couldn't make the re-filming because she had already moved on to start filming Spike Lee's "School Daze", that's why out of the three urchins, you don't see her in the end. Before the camera gets to her the camera quickly pans down and all you see is her stand-in's legs.

I actually missed Mean Green Mother from Outer Space when I saw the revival.
The movie was pretty good. I thought the show (the recent revival) was better, actually. A movie worth seeing, though, definitley.
I actually like the movie's ending MUCH better. (And subsequent stage productions I have seen have adopted the movie ending too.) The original stage ending betrays the B-movie, comic-book feel of the musical; in a B-movie or comic book, one expects the lovers to survive and live happily ever after, albeit a bit weary after what has happened.
Besides, how can you wipe out Seymour and Audrey like that? They're so cute together!
I think the work lacks dramatic balance without the stage ending. After all, despite how much we love him, Seymour has committed murder. His own death (going down fighting the plant) is a kind of retribution.
Yes, but the people he killed really, really deserved it!
And why did Audrey have to die? Humph.
Mushnik deserved to die? I dunno, being a jerk has never really struck me as a reason for someone to deserve death. Especially considering that, in the end, he wanted Seymour to go down to the police station with him because, as a pretty normal person, he couldn't just ignore murder. He was doing the right thing.
Audrey was just part of the tragedy, poor girl.

wow thanks Marquis i didnt notice the Tisha Campbell thing... and its good to know that they at least considered the stage ending before changing it
In a first version of the dvd, the alternate ending is on it.
you can see a black and white version, but it's full.

The movie is good, not the best. Really bad editing. In the opening scene you can see the same "extra" singing in the different places.
Ellen is the best Audrey!!!!!!

I have this movie. But how I do get the alternate ending? I've always wanted to see what it's like. I've only ever seen the movie, when it comes to LSOH, so I don't know what the original stage ending is like. Apparently, the plant wins. What a horrible ending.
That is the stage ending, rockfenris. But I think you have to remember it's not a fairy tale of pure good v pure evil, it's a Faust story, a sort of fable. No one in this play is truly good, except for Audrey. And the two of them still do end up together!
