Usually when a man sings the song, it's meant to be campy fun. I think I've heard of only one instance where a man sang "AIATYING" seriously and with real emotion...BWW's own RobbieJ in his cabaret.

i think that is a womans song... just very feminine in the music style and everything. However, i could be proved wrong!

On "Star Seach" (the newer one) this kid won like second place and his trademark song was "And I Am Telling You."

Visit his website (and listen to the song) here:

There's also two video clips of him singing it.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

fair enough, he's a male. But...isn't this kid singing it in the same key as a woman would? Being 12 as he must be.... Funny to hear him growl about "waking up tomorrow morning..."

We had a guy who used to do this weekly when I worked in Club Med. He was in drag (to start, at least) and it just brought down the house. Not that that really addresses the original question.

Billy Porter does a shortened version of it on his Corner of Broadway and Soul album/show. It's quite good.

It depends, If your an established star making your own cd or doing a concert then I don't see anything wrong with it. However, if it's for auditioning then that would be a mistake unless your auditioning for La Cage. Directors want their men to be men, even if they are girly in real life, so singing girl songs at auditions really only hurt you. But I am also a guy who loves singing this song and can do a kick ass version of it, but that's only in my car.

That kid is gonna be amazing in 10 years if he gets a vocal coach and takes care of his voice.

I love how people have to prove themselves somehow by saying how great they are, or how they can do this and that and this and without hurting their voices because they're so smart, and blah, blah, blah. I just don't understand the obsession with men singing females songs. I prefer female voices over male voices, my entire collection is female vocalists, but when I go on an audition, I stick to male oriented songs. I don't know...maybe it's just me...

The only time I've ever seen a man sing this song was in that Chris Rock movie "Down to Earth"

If it's for fun or for a concert and you can sing the **** out of it, go forth and sing well
If it's for an audition, I'd suggest singing some of Jimmy's songs like "Fake Your Way To The Top", "Steppin' to the Bad Side" or "I Meant You No Harm"

I think I've seen your act! In fact I know I have. Didn't you cut me off while singing the bridge and then flipped me the bird?

That kid doesn't sound too good singing that song. I was expecting his voice not to falter so much considering his voice hadn't changed yet. That boy will be teased and taunted about singing that song.

Tiffany Evans, the first star search winner, killed "And I'm Telling You." She also sung "I Am Changing."

If you're just singing a song "period," then why ask a board? I'll sing anything in the shower or in the car. When I'm driving, I'll become any and all characters from a show. Yet, do I come to a board and say, "Is it okay for me to sing 'Defying Gravity' or 'As Long As He Needs Me' in my car?" Usually when people ask, it's because they want to perform said pieces in public (usually a horrible idea) or for an audition (even worse).
